US Grade 1 - 2
If your student could benefit from a patient, engaging, experienced, and positive teacher who uses the structure of the Orton-Gillingham sequence and other scientifically-backed reading strategies to explicitly teach phonemic awareness, phonics, and reading, this would be a beneficial course for them to take to increase their confidence in reading and academic success. This class is geared for students who are currently reading at a high-achieving kindergarten level all the way to needing extra practice and/or an intervention as a third grade learner. I will provide explicit (direct and clear) instruction for a phonemic awareness warm-up and our phonics mini lesson, and I will patiently guide readers through our decodable reading passages that practice reading and noticing patterns in words with digraphs. We will use plenty of multisensory strategies and active, hands-on learning activities and games. Multisensory learning involves the use of visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile strategies to enhance memory and learning of written language. I have been teaching young readers for 11 years (3 years of part-time online tutoring experience as well). Students will have repeated, explicitly taught opportunities to: 1. Learn the sound spellings for the most common digraphs (sh, ch, th, ph, wh, -ck) with visuals and active, hands-on activities 2. Identify spelling patterns within words and sentences that revolve around learning digraphs 3. Segment and divide the word into individual sounds and/ or syllables 4. Build words with digraphs in a variety of ways 5. Read the words and sentences in the decodable passages, highlighting and identifying words with digraphs 6. Write words with digraphs independently 7. Use, read, and write words with digraphs in sentences. Note: Students will need to have mastery of consonant sounds, short vowel sounds, and be familiar with 2-letter blends before class. I gently encourage active participation, but want all learners to respond in the manner they feel most comfortable with. This is a one-time class. I also offer 1-1 tutoring on any phonics, reading, spelling, or writing skill your child is needing extra support with. I am here to help your learner, and to build a strong relationship with them so I can work to build their confidence as a reader!
Learning Goals
Students will be able to blend, read, build, and write words and sentences with a focus on digraphs (sh, ch, th, ph, wh, -ck).
