The effects of training phonological awareness and learning to read are mutually supportive. "Reading and phonemic awareness are mutually reinforcing: Phonemic awareness is necessary for reading, and reading, in turn, improves phonemic awareness still further." (Shaywitz, 2003, see References) **BRING A WHITE BOARD AND MARKER Each class will begin with a short phonemic awareness warm up together (Kilpatrick). These exercises can have a critical impact on reading success. An appropriate multi sensory phonics lesson based on the Barton Reading system will be shared focusing on an explicit skill or spelling rule. Students should know names and sounds for all 26 letters to get the most out of this class. Teacher leads students to sound out words that follow the weekly spelling pattern. First we finger spell, then write sound lines for each sound in the word, and finally we write the letters to the lines. Student’s vocalizing of each sound while they write is a powerful practice that will improve the fluency of any reader.
Learning Goals
In English we have 26 letters to represent the 44 different sounds in our language. This class will cover a different rule in each class, along with Kilpatrick's Phonemic Awareness drills that will help a child to increase their speed of word recognition.
