Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
Beginner Level
This is a semester-long class that focuses on the sounds of each basic phonogram (a-z). By the end of this class, your child will be able to read CVC words. We will also learn how to correctly form (handwriting) each phonogram.

My approach focuses on teaching all the sounds for each phonogram at one time. As your child progresses through our reading program, they will learn the rules as to when to use each sound in different words.

Once we get through about half of the phonograms, we will begin decoding and encoding words through spelling analysis activities. The process of spelling analysis teaches children to think critically about words rather than memorize words. Spelling analysis activities will also help develop reading and spelling fluency. During spelling analysis, learners will apply the phonograms and rules that they've already learned then analyze why they are spelled that way.

In addition to learning the basic phonogram sounds, your child will practice
-blending compound words
-blending CVC words
-beginning sounds
-medial vowel sounds
-ending sounds
-segment one-syllable words into their individual sounds
-change beginning sounds to create new words
-blend two-syllable words
-read simple books with CVC words

Class Format:
+Welcome
+Phonemic Awareness Activity
+Systematic Phonics Activity
+Handwriting and/or Spelling Analysis

Teaching Style:
My teaching style is hands-on and multi-sensory. We will play games that involve lots of movement. Each class will include some sort of review of the phonograms that involves a movement game.

When learning how to write our letters, we will practice the formation a variety of ways before we even pick up our pencils to write.

Homework:
There is no required homework for this class. However, a PDF with worksheets and games will be given each week that you may want to incorporate at home to help your child practice the skills learned in class.

Materials Needed:
-Whiteboard
-Dry Erase Board
-Eraser
-Index Cards
-Occasionally there will be a PDF with class resources to print
