Class Experience
Learn major and minor chords while we play “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” on ukulele! This song has basic chords and will give you plenty of opportunities practice chord changes. This is a one-on-one class good for learns who feel they need some more practice getting comfortable with a new instrument. We will first practice the chords in the song, then play one verse at a time, and finally put the song together. If you are comfortable, we can also practice singing and strumming at the same time. Please tune your ukulele before class!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello everyone!
I’m Cricket, they/them. I graduated from Randolph College with a B.A. in English, with honors.
I am a homeschool co-op teacher leading small groups of students ages 5-15 in a variety of subjects, including science, math, and English. My latest class is teaching reading to kindergarteners using TPR and synthetic phonics.
For the past seven years, I have been part of a nonprofit organization that teaches environmental education programs to school-aged children and community members. I lead after-school programs, field trips, birthday parties, and community programs where in each of these I teach participants about animals, ecology, and environmental awareness. For one summer, I was also garden educator at a local nonprofit summer camp. I designed and implemented weekly garden educational activities for campers aged 5-13.
Here on OutSchool, I teach private weekly ukulele and guitar classes for beginners who would like one-on-one instruction that matches their learning pace. We will learn chords and tableture through covers of fun songs. I offer a wide variety of songs, and will do my best to find songs your students request. Music has been a passion of mine since I was small. I have seven years of classical piano experience, which helped me learn to play other stringed instruments.
My teaching philosophy is to teach how to think, not what to think. My classes are more of a conversation than a lecture. I have an interdisciplinary approach to learning. I do not see class subjects as separate boxes, but rather as connecting with each other.
My classroom environment is relaxed, calm, and patient. And I am supportive of any pronouns your child is comfortable using.
