Learning Goals
In our first meeting, we will explore classical mythology (Greek and Roman) and its presence in the Harry Potter universe in both subtle and obvious ways. We will also examine the monomyth (hero's journey) and how it drives each of the Harry Potter novels individually and the series as a whole.

In our second meeting, we will analyze legends and myths from around the world and trace how J.K. Rowling has made them her own by seamlessly including them in her stories. We will also discuss how the Harry Potter stories have become an important part of millions of people around the world and have become a modern mythology in their own right.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a discussion-based class and is meant to be fun. My main goal in presenting it is that students would have a jumping off point to explore mythology and the hero's journey on their own after completion. As it is a survey class meant to introduce some of the basics of classical and world mythology, it may not be the right class for students who have already begun studying mythology extensively in school or on their own.

Why me? I'm a book reader. I'm a book lover. I'm a book author. I read for enjoyment, but I can't help but look at the author's craft as well, and through this I become a better writer and a better thinker. I wish to teach you to think this way, too.
