Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 9
This social studies tutoring class is designed to help each student with their individual needs. Since Social Studies is such a large topic, we can cover lots of different subjects depending on what the student needs to improve on. Not only is this class for tutoring but also for teaching new content. The student will hear a lecture and follow along through slides with pictures to visually represent the topic of study. Students will also be quizzed to ensure mastery of the topic. I believe that reading and social studies are closely linked topics, students will be working on comprehension skills while learning and improving their social studies knowledge. Through out the tutoring sessions students will get to participate in fun games that test their knowledge of the subject.

Topics that can be covered during tutoring
- World Governments
- U.S. Government
- American History
- World History
- Geography
- Economics
When teaching history classes I like to provide lots of different perspectives to make sure all viewpoints are covered. I never teach my political opinions during government courses or religious view points when discussing different cultures. I think it is important that students know about all viewpoints and cultures in order to have the respect and knowledge of life outside of their own.

Example Class
To start a class I have quick introductions and then move into our goals and agenda for the class. Typically, class will be lecture based with discussions and questions to check understanding while teaching. Before class ends, we will recap what we learned, answer a few questions and then decide what our next class is going to be covering. After ending a unit of study, I will provide a quiz to analyze what topics the student has mastered and if there should be any re-teaching happening. An example of this would be, if the student has just finished a 6 week unit on Ancient Mesopotamia then there will be a quiz to see how well they mastered the topics discussed and if I need to go back and teach a specific topic again before moving on.
Learning Goals
Students will have the ability to learn and practice all topics of Social Studies through tutoring. They will practice geography skills, history, and government.

Parental Guidance
This tutoring class will be kept age appropriate and will refrain from using excessively graphic images to represent the topics covered. Students also have the option of being exposed to different regions and cultures throughout the world. With this being a social studies class, the content will be completely factual and provide all view points of topics covered. When discussing a controversial topic, I am very strict when it comes to discussions. I do not tolerate hate speech or inappropriate comments. Questions may be asked but I do not share personal opinions. As far as handling controversial topics, all facts and sides are presented to ensure there is no bias.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Because there are sensitive topics when teaching social studies, relevant training is a must. My experience with teaching social studies is fairly deep. I have taught Social Studies to 6th and 8th graders for several years and then most recently moved up to teaching High School aged students for the past school year. Currently, I teach High School World History, U.S. Government, and U.S. History. In, college I was trained as a Middle School Social Studies teacher and have a degree in Social Studies Education. All my experience comes from being in a traditional school setting.
