Class Experience

Class Experience
This class is ongoing to teach different math concepts during each class to achieve mastery of the third grade common core standards. The class provides curriculum rigor that includes: conceptual understanding, skill and fluency and application to life. There is data driven instruction with four key components: Am I Ready?, Am I Understanding It?, Can I Apply It?, Did I Learn It?. McGraw Curriculum is used with digital resources. All third grade math standards will be covered between September 2021 and June 2022.

Mkk believes learning should be fun and that students should be engaged, therefore the teachers does not teach the entire class period and have the students take notes. The students are engaged throughout the lesson and all the students are given opportunities to participate. The class can appear disorganized to some parents, therefore if you like a very quiet and strict class this is not going to be your best option. MKK insures the students learn. The students typically go beyond the third grade standards. Students are given time at the beginning of class and at the end of class to socialize with each other. The class should be a place where friendships form and the students feel safe and comfortable.

MKK teachers practice positive behavior support. Clear classroom expectations will be stated at the beginning of the class and will be reviewed periodically. Student behavior will be managed with rewards rather than consequences. Students will receive high fives, tokens, and praise for following classroom expectations. I do reserve the right to mute students if they are engaging in conversation that interrupts instructional time.

MKK teaches growth mindset and higher order thinking.

What is Growth Mindset?

Knowing ALL students can learn at high levels
Believing your students that have never been proficient, can become proficient if and when the right supports are in place
Understanding that you, an educator, can learn a new skill, strategy, or tool
Trusting that although you can’t or don’t know how to do something now, it’s not the end of the story
Welcoming persistent effort and practice leads to improvement
Embracing mistakes and using them as feedback for how to do better next time
Knowing that you have the power to do anything; there are no limits

What is Higher Order Thinking?
Higher level thinking requires that we do something with the facts. We must understand them, infer from them, connect them to each other, categorize them, manipulate them, put them together in new or novel ways, and apply them as we seek new solutions to new
problems.

Please review the class listing carefully and consider your student’s needs. Feel free to send questions regarding the class prior to enrolling.
