30 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this class we will be reading the book Can Quillian Learn To Control His Temper?, written by Misty Black. Quillian is a young porcupine that has a bad temper. Sometimes he loses his quills. Along the way, Quillian learns strategies to help control his temper. I will read the story aloud engaging your child during reading, by asking him or her several comprehension questions. Please read the class description to see if this class is a good fit for your child. For example: * Why do you think that happened? * What do you think will happen next? * How do you think that character is feeling? What details does the author give you to support your answer? * Describe your connections to this story? * What was the problem in the story? How did the characters solve the problem? After reading the story, we will discuss the books parts, what happened in the beginning of the story, middle and end. We will discuss how Quillian’s temper affected his friends and family. We will discuss the strategies that Quillian learned to help control his temper. We will have a class discussion on strategies that your child can use to help control his or her temper. For example, doing belly breathing, counting to 5, positive self talk, making a good choice, talking to an adult, go for a walk, read a book, squish a pillow, listen to music, think happy thoughts, write or draw his or her feelings. I will list your child’s and the class discussion responses digitally. Your child will then draw an illustration on his or her favourite strategy. Your child will write an “I can” sentence. For example: I can calm my body by taking deep belly breaths. There will be 2 different hand outs. One hand out will have “I can…..”, the other hand out will have “I can calm my body by…….”. Please choose which hand out best fits your child’s needs. I will model writing. * Please note this is NOT a digital book. I will be holding the book up while reading. I am a kind, patient and friendly teacher. I can not wait to meet your child! See you in the classroom! Ms. Colleen
