Class Experience

In this class we will be reading a digital story, Little Green Jacket, written by Jodi Dee. This is a black and white story, with a bright green jacket. The story is about a green jacket that makes it way to several children from around the world. When the children outgrow their jacket they donate it. Lastly, the jacket is donated to a girl in need after a natural disaster. The story shows the importance of how we can help each other out. We will be focusing on comprehension through story elements and the story's lesson. Please read the class description to see if this class is a good fit for your child.

We will begin class with a book walk. I will ask your child to make a prediction on what the book may be about. I will read the story aloud engaging your child during reading, by asking them several comprehension questions.

For example:
* Why do you think that happened?
* What do you think will happen next?
* Describe the characters.
* What is the setting of the story?
* How do you think that character is feeling? What details does the author give you to support your answer?
* Describe your connections to this story?
* What was the problem in the story? How did the characters solve the problem?

We will then complete some comprehension activities. We will have a discussion on the story's lesson. As a class, we will discuss this together. For example: We can support and help one another in this world. I will model writing. If choosing to write, students will then copy down the sentence. There will be two differentiated handouts: Your child will be given the option to illustrate their ideas with the story's lesson already printed on the handout or write and illustrate their ideas. Please pick which handout best fits your child.

We will then share our illustrations and writing with the class.

Please note that this is not an editing class. Each child is unique and works at their own pace. Some children may want to take extra time outside of class to work on their illustrations. Your child is encourage to do their work to the best of their ability.

* Please note this is a digital story.
I am a kind, friendly and patient teacher. I look forward to supporting your child's literacy development. I cannot wait to meet your child. See you in the classroom! Ms. Colleen
