Class Experience

In this class, I will be reading the book, Sleeping Dragons All Around, written by Sheree Fitch, aloud to your child. I choose engaging and meaningful activities to help make reading fun and enjoyable. We will be focusing on comprehension through story elements: Focus - Setting. Please read the class description to see if this class is a good fit for your child.

We will begin class with a book walk. I will ask your child to make a prediction on what the book may be about. I will read the story aloud engaging your child during reading, by asking them several comprehension questions.

For example:
* Why do you think that happened?
* What do you think will happen next?
* How do you think that character is feeling? What details does the author give you to support your answer?
* Describe your connections to this story?
* What was the problem in the story? How did the characters solve the problem?

After reading the story, we will discuss the books parts, what happened in the beginning of the story, middle and end.

We will then do a setting focus activity. As a class, we will discuss the three of the characters in the story and write a sentence about each of the dragons. For example: Priscilla is a gentle dragon who likes blue earrings. Beelzebus is a messy dragon who enjoys blowing blue bubbles. I will model writing on a digital slide. Students will be given the option to write and draw or draw only about the characters of the story. There will be two differentiated handouts: Your child will be given the option to illustrate their ideas or write and illustrate their ideas. Please pick which handout that best fits your child.

We will then share our illustrations and writing with the class.

Please note that this is not an editing class. Each child is unique and works at his or her own pace. Some children may want to take extra time outside of class to work on their illustrations. Your child is encourage to do their work to the best of their ability.

Please note, this is NOT a digital book. I will be holding the book while reading.
I am excited to help support your child's literacy development. I am a kind, patient and friendly teacher. I cannot wait to see your child in the classroom! Ms. Colleen

I have permission from Sheere Fitch to read her books.
