Class Experience

In this novel study class, your child will be reading, Matilda, written by Roald Dahl   Please note that your child will need a copy of this book.  This class will meet once a day for 4 days over winter break. We will be focusing on literacy elements each class. 

In each class, I will ask your child several comprehension questions to help support his or her learning.  Each class will have different comprehension questions.  Here is a list of some examples:
* How does the character feel? What words or descriptions does the author give to support your answers?
* What are you wondering? What questions do you have?
* Predict what will happen next.
* What caused (character in this chapter) to .....? What was the effect of ....?
* What was important on this page? Why?
* Summarize what you read. What's the most important part?
* How does each character react to....?
* What do you think this word means?
* Why did the character say....?
* How are ____ & ____ similar? How are they different?
* Did the character change? Why?

In each class, I will be displaying the activities on Google slides. 
Class#1:
* We will do a book introduction
* Your child will make predictions on what the story is going to be about.
* I will read the first 2 chapters of the novel aloud.
* We will discuss parts of the chapter -  beginning, middle and end.
* I will ask your child several comprehension questions.
* We will make predictions on what will happen in the next chapter. 
* Character Traits Activity: We will take notes about each Matilda's traits during the reading of the book. We will digitally list the character’s interests, physical appearance, likes/dislikes and experiences.
* Favourite Scene: Your child will write about and illustrate their favourite scene from chapter 1 or 2  I will model writing. Please have pencils, markers and crayons on hand.
* Your child will be asked to read the next 4 chapters before the start of the next class.

Class #2
* We will discuss parts of the chapters -  beginning, middle and end that have occurred in the previous 4 chapters that your child has read before class.
* I will ask your child several comprehension questions.
* We will make predictions on what will happen in the next chapter.
* Character Description Activity: We will add to our notes.
* Diary Entry: Your child will write a diary entry from Matilda's point of view, including ideas on the problem and potential solutions. I will model writing. Please have pencils, crayons and markers on hand.
* Your child will be asked to read the next 4 chapters before the start of the next class.

Class #3
* We will discuss parts of the chapters -  beginning, middle and end that have occurred in the previous 4 chapters that your child has read before class.
* I will ask your child several comprehension questions.
* We will make predictions on what will happen in the next chapter.
* Character Notes Activity: We will add to our notes.
* Compare and Contrast:  Using a Venn Diagram, we will compare and contrast the two characters - Ms. Honey and Ms. Trunchbull. This will be done digitally.
* Chapter Picture Summary: Your child will summarize the chapters read through drawing pictures and writing a sentence.  This will include sequencing the pictures in order, labels, sentence and/or speech bubbles.  I will model writing. Please have pencils, markers and crayons on hand.
* Your child will be asked to read the next 4 chapters before the start of the next class.

Class #4
* We will discuss parts of the chapters -  beginning, middle and end that have occurred in the previous 3 chapters that your child has read before class.
* We will make predictions on what will happen in the next chapter.
* Character Notes Activity: We will add to our notes.
* Story Snapshots Activity: Your child will illustrate the most important events from the story in order from the beginning to end.  This will include a written description. I will model writing. Please have pencils, markers and crayons on hand.

Please note that each student is unique. Some students may want to spend extra time outside of class working on their activities.

Hello, my name is Ms. Colleen.  I am a certified licensed elementary school teacher.  I have been a classroom teacher for over 12 years in Nova Scotia, Canada. Throughout my teaching career, I have taught students from primary to grade 8 and look forward to bring my teaching knowledge to the online classroom.  I also have experience teaching ESL lessons on an online setting. 

Teaching young children is my passion! I choose engaging and meaningful activities to help support life long learning.  I strive to produce a positive and encouraging class environment where learners will want to participate, helping to support learners in achieving their academic goals. 

I have a Bachelor of Education Degree and a Child and Youth Degree both from Mount Saint Vincent University.  I also hold a Child and Youth Worker Diploma and an Early Childhood Education Diploma both from the Institute For Human Services Education. I also have received my Outschool ACE certification.

I have been a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters, being a big sister to a grade 5 child. I have been a swimming instructor teaching children from the infant age to adults. In my spare time, I enjoy playing the piano, reading, hiking and having fun with my small dog Belle.
