US Grade 4
Grade 4 Multiplication This unit’s focus is on multiplication up to 4 digit numbers. Lessons will be displayed using powerpoint or google slides. Students are encouraged to use manipulatives throughout the unit. I will include a paper copy of manipulatives. Students should be able to multiply 3 digit by 3 digit numbers before taking this class. Students will need an understanding also of multiplication and division as our warm ups will include these practices. Please take a look at the following description below to see if this class is a good fit for your learner. Each lesson will have the same format: Warm up: we will do a math warm up to help turn on our minds to get ready for the lesson. A math question(s) will be displayed on a google slide. Our focus on this unit will be multiplication and division. Students can record their thinking on a worksheet. Students are encouraged to share their thinking with the class. Lesson: I will teach a lesson to the class. We will work together using anchor charts, manipulatives and powerpoint presentations. Students will “Watch Me First”, explaining a concept and work through a problem. Then through guided practice, students will work through the material with me. Students will be provided with a worksheet to record their thinking as we engage in the lesson. I will be using digital or paper manipulatives. Independent work: Students will work on assigned work with support from me. Students will be provided with a worksheet. We will go over the work together. Students are encouraged to share their thinking with the class. Game to support multiplication. Games will start off by using multiplication facts of 1 digit numbers and increase to help support your learners multiplication fact fluency. Reflection: Students will reflect on their thinking and how they feel about the math topic. Extension: Students will be provided with an extension activity that he or she can complete on their own time. Extension activities are a support for learning outside of class time. These activities are not evaluated by me. Lesson 1 - Multiplication Patterns Objective: Learners will investigate patterns by multiplying by 10, 100 & 1,000. For example: 13 x 10 = ?, 8 x 100 = ?, 4 x 1,000 = ?. What patterns do I notice? Manipulatives: Base 10 blocks Game: Basic Multiplication Fact BINGO - students will practice their recall on single digit multiplication to increase fact fluency. Lesson 2 - Multiplication Patterns Continued Objective: Learners will investigate patterns by multiplying by multiples of 10, 100 & 1,000. For example: multiplying various numbers by 10s, 100s and 1,000s. 5 x 50 is the same as ? groups of ? using base 10 blocks, therefore 5 x 50 = ?. Manipulatives: Base 10 Blocks Game: 2 Digit Multiplication Students Vs. Teacher Lesson 3 - Multiplying 2 Digit Numbers By 10 Objective: Learners will investigate numbers and patterns when multiplying two multiples of 10. For example: 50 x 70 is the same as ? groups of ? using base 10 blocks, therefore 50 x 70 = ?. Manipulatives: Base 10 Blocks Game: Multiplication Memory 2 Digit by 1 Digit Numbers Lesson 4 - Estimation Objective: Learners will investigate rounding to estimate answers. For example: 44 x 68 (rounding 44 to the nearest 10, rounding 68 to the nearest - 40 x 70 = ?), using estimation to multiply 2 digits by 2 digits, 3 digits by 1 digit, 4 digits by 1 digit. Manipulatives: Base 10 Blocks Game: BINGO 2 Digit by 2 Digit Multiplication Lesson 5 - Multiplication & Area Objective: Learners will investigate distributive property and area models to multiply 1-digit by 2-digit numbers. For example: Students will use graphing paper to draw an area model to complete multiplication questions - 4 x 54 = ?. Manipulatives: Base 10 Blocks, graphing paper Game: Roll & Solve - Please have dice on hand. 2 Digit by 2 Digit multiplication activity. Lesson 6 - Multiplication & Area Continued Objective: Learners will investigate using area models to multiply 1-digit by 3-digit & 4-digit numbers. For example: students will use graphing paper or blank paper to draw an area model to complete multiplication questions - 3 x 535, 8 x 1,634. Manipulatives: Base 10 Blocks, graphing paper or blank paper Game: Spin & Multiply - 3 Digit Multiplication by 1 Digit Multiplication Lesson 7 - Area Model Continued Objective: Learners will investigate area models to multiply two 2-digit numbers. For example: drawing an area model to solve multiplication equations - 12 x 24, 46 x 46. Manipulatives: Base 10 Blocks, graphing paper or blank paper Game: Tic Tac Toe - 3 Digit By 1 or 2 Digit Multiplication Lesson 8 - Area Model Continued Objective: Learners will continue to practice investigating area models to multiply two numbers. For example: matching area models to the multiplication sentence. Manipulatives: Base 10 Blocks, graphing paper or blank paper Game: 3 In A Row - 4 Digit by 1 Digit Multiplication Lesson 9 - Multiplication and Partial Products Objective: Learners will investigate using partial products to multiply 1-digit by 3-digit and 4-digit numbers. For example: finding the product of 4 x 322 (4 x 300 + 4 x 20 + 8) Manipulatives: Base 10 Blocks, graphing paper or blank paper, partial product mat Game: Spin & Cover 4 Digit by 1 Digit Multiplication Game: Cover Up 4 Digit by 1 Digit Multiplication - Please have dice on hand Lesson 10 - Multiplication and Partial Products Continued Objective: Learners will investigate using partial products to multiply two 2-digit numbers. For example: finding the product of 74 x 40 using a partial product mat. Manipulatives: Base 10 Blocks, graphing paper or blank paper, partial product mat. Game: Roll & Multiply - Students Vs Teacher Lesson 11 - Multiplication and Partial Products Continued Objective: Learners will continue investigating using partial products to multiply two 2-digit numbers. For example: matching the answer with the equation, showing his or her work on how to get the answer for up to 4 digit by 1 digit multiplication. Manipulatives: Base 10 Blocks, graphing paper or blank paper, partial product mat. Game: Know or Go - Students Vs Teacher
