US Grade 1
Beginner Level
A small group will help give your learner more opportunity to practice the concepts from this class. Let's have fun reading together!! ***This course is best suited for grade 1 level readers that would benefit from a phonics approach to reading. Learners should be able to write a sentence independently. Story sentence example: Dad fixed a van. If you have a learner that is younger than the recommended age range and would like to join, please send me a message. The class may go over listed time depending on learner's needs. Class Format - Each class will follow the same format but will focus on different letter sounds, sight words and a decodable mini story: * Warm up: teacher will display PowerPoint flash cards of letter sounds. Students will repeat the sounds. Blending sounds: students will practice blending sounds of real words and nonsense words. Sight words: students will read given sight words. Students will tap or clap out the letters/sounds of these words. Then teacher will write a sight word on the screen. Student will take a "picture" of the word with their brain. Teacher will then erase the word. Students will air write the word (drawing the letters in the air) without seeing the word. High frequency words: students will practice reading high frequency words by tapping sounds, drawing lines for the sounds (word mapping), writing the word, and repeating after the teacher. Dictation: teacher will say a sound, students will write the letter. Teacher will say a word, students will write the word. Teacher will dictate a sentence to the students and students will write out the sentence. Students will edit their sentence. Decodable mini book: students will practice reading the book aloud during class. Each student will take a turn reading aloud with support from the teacher. Decodable books help learners use their phonics skills to decode the text. Students will be asked to shade in letters, underline words, double underline sight words, and circle punctuation. Please print out book. At Home Phonics/Word Activity: students will be provided a worksheet/activity on a phonics skill to help support learning at home. Please note students may be using scissors during this time, it is important to supervise students.
