Class experience

US Grade 8 - 11
 1. Reading Comprehension: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the plot, themes, and key events in "Moby Dick" by accurately summarizing and analyzing the text.

2. Critical Thinking: Students will develop critical thinking skills by evaluating the motivations, actions, and relationships of the characters in "Moby Dick," and making evidence-based predictions and interpretations.

3. Literary Analysis: Students will analyze the literary techniques used by Herman Melville in "Moby Dick," such as symbolism, foreshadowing, and irony, and explain their impact on the overall meaning of the story.

4. Interpretation and Inference: Students will infer meaning from the text, drawing connections between events, characters, and themes in "Moby Dick," and support their interpretations with textual evidence.

5. Communication: Students will participate in thoughtful and respectful discussions, expressing their ideas clearly and effectively, while actively listening and responding to the perspectives of others.

6. Creative Expression: Students will engage in creative projects inspired by "Moby Dick," such as character dioramas, artistic interpretations, or creative writing exercises, allowing them to express their understanding and creativity.

7. Empathy and Perspective-Taking: Students will develop empathy by examining the motivations and emotions of the characters in "Moby Dick" and relating them to their own experiences and the world around them.

8. Vocabulary and Language Skills: Students will expand their vocabulary by encountering and analyzing challenging words and phrases within the context of "Moby Dick," enhancing their overall language skills.

Homework Offered
As part of this Outschool book club class on "Moby Dick," students will have engaging and thought-provoking homework assignments designed to reinforce and extend their learning. Homework tasks will be manageable and align with the content covered in each class session. Here's an overview of the homework expectations: Reading Assignments: Students will be assigned specific chapters or sections of the book to read between classes. Reading assignments will deepen their familiarity with the story, characters, and themes, providing a foundation for in-class discussions and activities. Reflective Responses: Students will be encouraged to reflect on their reading and class discussions by completing short written or verbal responses. These reflections may involve personal connections to the text, critical analysis of key scenes, or posing thought-provoking questions for further exploration. Vocabulary Exploration: Vocabulary plays an essential role in understanding "Moby Dick." Students will have opportunities to explore and learn new words from the text. Vocabulary exercises or word study activities will help expand their vocabulary and reinforce their comprehension of the novel. Creative Projects: Throughout the course, students will have the chance to engage in creative projects inspired by "Moby Dick." Some of these projects may be assigned as homework, allowing students to delve deeper into their artistic interpretations, creative writing pieces, or character analyses. Research and Contextual Understanding: Students may be assigned short research tasks to explore the historical and cultural context of "Moby Dick" or delve into related topics that enhance their understanding of the novel's themes or settings. Discussion Prompts: Students may be given discussion prompts to reflect on and prepare for future in-class discussions. These prompts will encourage critical thinking and provide an opportunity for students to develop their own perspectives and insights. The homework assignments will be designed to be manageable within a reasonable time frame and aligned with the class objectives. Students are encouraged to complete their homework diligently to maximize their engagement with the material and contribute meaningfully to the in-class discussions and activities. The educator will provide clear instructions and support for completing the homework assignments, and students will have opportunities to share and discuss their homework during class time.
2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students will be given informal assesments throught the course, based on partipation, work completion, engagement and the students ability to show thier understanding of the concepts taught in class. A letter grades cn be requested by the parent or partner school.
Grades Offered
Learners will need: 
Copy of the book "Moby Dick" by Herman Melville (physical copy or digital version)
Writing materials (notebook, paper, pens, pencils)
Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, crayons, scissors, glue)
Access to a computer or device with reliable internet connection for virtual class sessions
Optional: Additional reference materials or resources related to the historical context of "Moby Dick" (books, online articles, etc.)
Loom, Kahoot, Google Classroom, Forms, Docs, Jamboard and Slides will all be used to brainstorm and share ideas, and create interactive workspaces.  Students are not required to use these resources, however they are helpful to colaborate, share, interact with classmates and gain imidiate feedback on progress. If your child does not have access to one or more of these resources, they will be provided alternate ways to engage and participate within the classroom, though they may not expeince as rich an experience.   
Loom, Kahoot, Google Classroom, Forms, Docs, Jamboard and Slides will all be used to brainstorm and share ideas, and create interactive workspaces.  Students are not required to use these resources, however they are helpful to colaborate, share, interact with classmates and gain imidiate feedback on progress.
