In this semester long second grade class, students will join the teacher three days a week (Mon-Wed-Fri) for a well-rounded language arts curriculum in phonics, sight words, spelling, writing, grammar, & reading comprehension while having a blast playing games, reading books, doing word work and other fun activities together!! Running on a 26 -week cycle (two semesters) year-round this class is designed for children who are entering 2nd Grade in the fall or for students who need to revisit the Second Grade Level Foundational Reading Skills. This class will cover all of the language art skills that a child would learn in a Second Grade setting. FALL AND WINTER SECTIONS RUN SEPTEMBER THROUGH DECEMBER SPRING SECTIONS RUN JANUARY THROUGH MAY Fall Sections begin SEPTEMBER 9th 2024 ⭐️⭐️All activities will be led by the teacher and will consist of whole class activities as well as individual student work and activities. Since the class size will be small we will have time for students to interact with the teacher as well as one another. My activities will consist of interactive games/video clips/white board and magnetic letter work as well as reading and discussing interactive texts. ⭐️⭐️ Class will begin with a greeting and talking about their day or their weekend. Each class time will include an interactive game or educational video that focuses on a skills we are learning that day. We will also have a writing activity where we practice letter sound relationships, writing words or simple sentences. Each session will also include an interactive text that I am sharing with them as a read aloud or a grade level text that they are reading to me. We will address sight words as well throughout the games, writing activities and interactive texts. We will always end the class with a brief share time where kids can tell me things or share their favorite stuffed animal etc. 🍁 🍁 🍁 🍁Week of September 9th 🍁 🍁 🍁 🍁 Phonics/Word Recognition: Review Blends Heart Words: Play a WordWall Game to see how many Kinder and 1st Grade Irregular Spelled Words they know. Vocabulary: Context Clues- Introducing what they are. Talk about how they help us determine the meaning of a word. Play a Google Drive Fill In the Blank Game using context clues and reviewing 1st Grade Vocabulary. Grammar: Reviewing what nouns and verbs are. Brainstorming examples of each. Discussing different comprehension skills that go along with the text. . Vocabulary: Context Clues- Introducing what they are. Talk about how they help us determine the meaning of a word. Play a Google Drive Fill In the Blank Game using context clues and reviewing 1st Grade Vocabulary. Grammar: Reviewing Regular and Irregular Plural Nouns Read a book with examples of these in it. Play a WordWall Game to decide which singular and plural nouns are regular and irregular 🍁 🍁 🍁 🍁 Week of September 23rd 🍁 🍁 🍁 🍁 Phonics/Word Recognition: Review VCe words Irregular Heart Words: Introduce (mother/brother/father/water) Read them. Fluency and Comprehension: Reading end of 1st grade level text from Just Right Readers or Half Pint Kids that contain VCe words. Discussing different comprehension skills that go along with the text. Vocabulary: Prefixes- Introduce what a prefix is. Review some common prefixes from Kinder and 1st Grade. (re-/dis-/mis-/un-/pre-) Grammar: Adjectives Introduce what an adjective is. Play a fun game where everyone gets something from their room/house they can hold in their hand. Discussing different comprehension skills that go along with the text. Vocabulary: Review what a Synonym is. Play a game where we try to generate as many synonyms as we can for a word. Share Google Slides Synonym activities. Grammar:Adverb Introduce what an adverb is. Talk about some example of adverbs using a Google Slides Activity. Learning Goals
Reading, writing and building words with complex vowel teams and multi-syllables. Correctly forming and writing more complex sentences. Learning to read the first 600 most common sight words in print. Fluently reading and comprehending level J text and higher.

I have been a K-2 teacher for over 20 years. My expertise is in reading intervention and I have worked in that area for the last 8 years. I am very passionate about helping children learn how to read and especially passionate about helping those students who are struggling and need an out of the box way to learn how to become successful readers! I take a very hands on multi-sensory approach to learning the basic foundational skills and above all we make it fun!!!!
