Class Experience
Hi Learners! During story time I read a high quality picture book, stopping frequently to ask students questions and to have students do physical movements to keep them engaged. I also use silly voices and singing to make our time together enjoyable. Then we finish with a drawing, "writing," or simple art craft to extend the story and make connections to the story. During story time we discuss: ~beginning/middle/end of the story (plot) ~characters ~setting ~themes ~practice responding to stories by drawing, writing, or creating a simple art craft
I am a certified K-6 teacher and have taught for 21 years.
I encourage students to use the drawing, writing, or simple art craft they created to "retell" the story to a family member, pet, or favorite stuffed animal. This helps students retain the skills they learned and build confidence in their ability to learn.

Students leave story time feeling confident about the response (drawing, writing, or simple art craft) they created because I give specific, positive feedback and encouragement to each student.
