Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 7
Narrative Writing Camp

In this camp, our focus will be on creating a great narrative essay. There are several key ingredients required for a great narrative. Students will be working on creating leads, dialogue, transitions, and some parts of speech necessary to write a strong narrative essay. At the end of the week, students will submit and review their final essays. Not only will students practice their own writing skills, but they will also have the opportunity to experience peer review and edit.

Camp schedule
Day 1- All about leads. This specific day, students will focus on the different types of leads and practice making them. This will help them master catching the readers attention, all while, helping them pick which style of lead is going to suit their story best.

Day 2- Dialogue, transitions, and creating stronger narratives. This day will focus on identifying dialogue between characters and the importance of labeling the dialogue within a story. Students will also practice using transitions to help the flow and structure of their paragraphs.

Day 3- Expanding sentences using figurative language, clauses, adverbs, and adjectives. Students will practice using these parts of speech to create strong, dynamic sentences.

Day 4- Put it all together. Students will take what they have learned to put it into words. They will use this class to begin writing their narrative essays.

Day 5- students will have time review their essays before submission. As a group, we will go through and label the different parts of the narrative essay. Student will be identifying the key pieces of the narrative. This will also give us the opportunity to practice revising and editing. Every one will have the opportunity to share their narrative.

This camp may be focused on narrative writing, but the skills students will learn from this will help them in all areas of writing.
