The only reason a child will have homework is if they miss a class and would like to stay caught up with what is going on in the book. I will not be assigning chapters as we will read them together in class.Assessment
Learners progress is assessed through observation and oral/ written assessment to students and parents.Class Experience
US Grade 5 - 8
During this book study, not only will students be reading a new story, but they will also be practicing communication skills, comprehensions skills and strategies, and engaging with other students over the contents of the book. Bridge to Terabithia is a great book for students to read. This book helps students visualize what they are reading and making real world connections. I will teach the students by reading the story to them or offering up sections for students to reads aloud if they would like. After each chapter is read, the class will discuss the events, characters, and setting of the book. Students will also discuss and complete a reading strategy for each chapter. There are 13 chapters, 2-3 chapters per class meeting. The last class meeting, we will read the last chapter and then share your opinions about the book. This class allows me to incorporate lots of comprehension strategies in each chapter. I will provide a handout for students to use during or after our class meetings. I will frequently reference this handout each class meeting. This handout will help students practice their skills. Students should be able to read at a 3rd grade level before joining this class. This prior knowledge will help them when it comes time to follow along and comprehending the text of this book.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their reading comprehension skills and reading fluency from this class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hey! I'm Mrs. Kirbie! I am so excited to share my love for reading and history. I am currently a high school social studies teacher but have also taught middle school. I am an experienced English, Reading, and Social Studies teacher for both Middle School and High School students. I strongly believe that social studies helps improve reading skills and having great reading skills helps students in all areas of learning. I love helping students perfect their skills through practice and exploration. My teaching style consists of repetition practice, lectures, cognitive discussions on topics, and visual learning. I think constant repetition of skills helps students create appropriate habits and lets them build their skills. I work hard to make my classes a place where students can improve without pressure and find a love for learning through reading!
A few fun facts about me are that I grew up on a ranch with cattle and horses. I am a country girl at heart and love to be outside. I have my own cattle ranch that I will be sharing with husband! Along with working on the ranch, I compete all across the United States in rodeos. I compete in the breakaway roping event. I grew up in a rodeo family and intend to raise my future children in the same atmosphere. I believe that hard work takes you farther than talent. One of my favorite sayings, that I learned from my father is, "Winners never quit, quitters never win, and cheaters never prosper". I implement this in all aspects of my teaching career because I think it is something that everyone needs to learn and use their entire life. Nothing worth having is ever easy to obtain.
My personal background has shaped my teaching career because it proves that there are multiple ways to learn and accomplish a task. Through my work on the farm and with animals, I have learned that every student doesn't learn the same way. They may need to be taught from a different approach or be assessed differently than tradition. I pride myself in being able to adapt my lessons to fit the needs of each student.
