Class Experience

In this fun, ongoing club we will learn how to give short speeches based on “Would You Rather…” topics. The atmosphere will be relaxed and encouraging, plus learners may enroll or drop out anytime. Regular practice of public speaking is extremely beneficial for all children, especially those who feel nervous or shy. When you enroll your learners in this club, they will have a friendly place to practice essential communication skills and feel empowered to continue! In each of our sessions, learners will be taught specific speaking skills for their “Would Your Rather…” mini-speeches and find many moments of success to build on.

Every class will begin with a “Speaking Tip of the Day” followed by an introduction to our “Would you rather…” topics. As a group we will brainstorm positive, persuasive points for both topics and I will type the ideas in the chat for students to look at during their turn. Learners will pick one of the topic choices to do a short speech on(up to one minute long). I will gently guide students in how to do a great opening line, state their opinions in a positive and convincing way, how to use the chat points in their speeches, and how to end with a convincing closing line. After each turn, there will be claps, cheers, accolades, maybe some virtual fist bumps! If time allows, we will fine tune our skills and help each other improve with positive suggestions and perhaps another go-around for those interested in trying again.

Here is an example of what one of the speeches may sound like:
"A cat is great pet to own. They are easy to litter train and easy to feed. I love to pet cats and hear them purr in happiness. Who wouldn't want to pet a soft, fluffy cat? It's so fun to have a cat sit on your lap and they will keep you company so you don't feel alone. They are especially cute when they are kittens! A really nice bonus to having a cat as a pet is that they are usually good mousers and you won't have to worry about coming across a mouse in your house! So if you're considering a pet, a cat is definitely worth it.

Schedule of “Would You Rather…” Mini-Speech Topics:
Meeting 1: Would you rather own a cat or a dog?
Meeting 2: Would you rather play computer games or play outside?
Meeting 3: Would you rather see a shark or a dolphin?
Meeting 4: Would you rather play your favorite sport or read your favorite book?
Meeting 5: Would you rather sleep on the top bunk or the bottom bunk?
Meeting 6: Would you rather play in the snow or play on the beach?
Meeting 7: Would you rather eat a sweet treat or a salty treat?
Meeting 8: Would you rather spend an evening with one friend or go to a party with a big group?
Meeting 9: Would you rather go on a plane trip or a road trip?
Meeting 10: Would you rather have a home cooked meal or a restaurant meal?

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a certified teacher with 26 years of experience in Canadian classrooms. I specialize in Middle Years English and have taught and led hundreds if not thousands of lessons/activities involving speaking in small groups, large groups, concerts, plays, readers theatre, debates, assemblies, and projects. My students have won individual awards at speech festivals and I regularly entered my classes in the choral speaking division of the festival where we would perform poems and readings, three times achieving the top score. Best of all we had so much fun together, and it was pure joy for me to see how proud the kids were of themselves!
