Hey everyone, bring your copies of Peanuts, Garfield, Calvin and Hobbes, and the Far Side to this book club for laughing and learning! Did you know that reading a cartoon book takes an intelligent mind, not to mention it's downright fun? Here's your chance to learn while having a bunch of laughs. And if you don't have any comic books by our featured cartoonists, no worries at all...just bring your sense of humor!! In this book club, we will feature one cartoon series per meeting. As we...
This class is taught in English.
Learners will: -enjoy a laugh and a bond with other readers -realize cartoons and comic strips often have meaning behind the humor -take part in respectful discussions about the cartoons -be introduced to and discuss writing and illustrating techniques which make the cartoons work
Cartoons and comic strips have always been part of my teaching in the middle grades over the many years. In my homeroom reading nooks, students would rush to the bookshelves to get their hands on my beloved collection of Garfield books. Calvin & Hobbes and Peanuts books were perennial favorites as well. And, of course, at my teacher’s station sat a classic Far Side desk calendar, promising a hilarious cartoon of the day, injecting each morning with a laugh. Kids loved to see various Far Side cartoons as part of their worksheets or on bulletin boards! As you can see, learning and laughter make an awesome combination and I am excited to continue this tradition.
Students will be required to read and contemplate 2 cartoons per day by the featured cartoonist prior to each meeting. The cartoons will be sent through the outschool classroom page before the zoom meetings.
No books are needed for this course. If children are interested in drawing the cartoon characters, they may bring drawing and coloring supplies to class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Assessment will be ongoing throughout each class. As we discuss the cartoons I will be asking various questions which will determine learner comprehension and engagement. Adjustments and communication will be made when needed to ensure each learner is reaching the above learning goals
35 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Parents, please note that all themes in class will be kept at an age appropriate level. For the most part, all of the cartoonists we are studying write their material for a wide age range of readers, from the young to the old. In the case of some of the “The Far Side” cartoons, the themes can get a little dark at times and are better suited for adults or older students. For this reason, I will carefully be screening the cartoons for class three in the series to make sure only age-appropriate cartoons are shown and discussed.
