How Outschool Works
Don't see a time that works for you?
Run away with me to Anne’s Land in magical Prince Edward Island, Canada! In this five week Book Club, we will be enjoying Lucy Maud Montgomery’s world famous novel, “Anne of Green Gables”, and creating a homemade vintage “Kindred Spirit Journal”. Maybe you have read the book before and want to enjoy it again with other readers. Or maybe you have watched the Netflix series “Anne With an E”, or the 1985 movies with Megan Follows! Then this course is for you! No matter if you have read the book...
Learning Goals: -read a literary classic and build an appreciation of good literature -analyze, relate to, discuss, and ENJOY the main character Anne Shirley -learn to ask good discussion questions and take an active, respectful part in discussions -learn to select meaningful quotations and explain why they are meaningful -tackle tricky vocabulary by looking for clues in the passage -practice reading aloud certain sections with expression and fluency -relate and respond personally to the text, see what Anne teaches us about ourselves -learn about PEI’s very distinctive setting in Canada and expand basic geography knowledge -enjoy a bond with fellow readers
I am a certified teacher with 26 years of experience in Canadian classrooms. I specialize in Middle Years English and have led hundreds of book clubs with countless fifth and sixth grade children. I have truly enjoyed every minute of it. Perhaps most telling of all, I have been enthralled with “Anne of Green Gables” my whole life...so much so, that I went to Prince Edward Island and bought a farmhouse there!!
-Reading of the novel is done primarily as homework before each meeting(If the text is too hard for your child to understand, parents may feel free to read sections aloud to the child for better enjoyment of the novel.) -Learners will be required to do the following assignments prior to each meeting and be prepared to share their work verbally at book club meetings(besides the first meeting where I will explain and model how to do the assignments): -Pick a favorite quote from the assigned text -Pick 3 interesting words from the assigned text -Form a discussion question based on the assigned text -A template will be provided for learners to record the above assignments for each meeting -The homemade journals will be partially completed as homework, but learners can make these journals as simple or as detailed as they want them to be
-A copy of the novel “Anne of Green Gables” from your local public library or buy one online(Amazon or EBay) -A template for Book Club work will be provided -Vintage Homemade Journal Supplies: 10 sheets of regular 8.5x11” printer paper, tea bags, twine or ribbon for binding, pencil, glue stick, scissors, 2-4 regular sized white envelopes, a basic watercolor paint set, a few flowers or leaves suitable for pressing(pansy, wildflower, violets), a heavy book or two for pressing flowers. I will communicate which of these supplies are needed at your computer station well ahead of each class.
Assessment will be ongoing throughout each class. As we discuss the book I will be asking various questions which will determine learner comprehension and engagement. Adjustments and communication will be made when needed to ensure each learner is reaching the above learning goals.
1 hour 40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
