Class Experience

A love for reading doesn't happen overnight but through positive and enriching experiences with authentic literature.
In this 6-week course, students will have the opportunity to explore various titles in the Mr. Putter and Tabby series by award-winning author Cynthia Rylant, discuss narrative text structure, participate in lively discussion and make connections with the loveable characters of this series.

Weeks one and two: Meet the author of this fun-loving series, Cynthia Rylant. Students will check out the many books written by this author, discuss the common themes found in her books, and meet the characters Mr. Putter and Tabby as they start reading Mr. Putter and Tabby Pour the Tea.

Weeks two and three: Students will continue exploring additional titles in this series such as Mr. Putter and Tabby Take the Train and Mr. Putter and Tabby Bake the Cake and engage in an in-depth character study of Mr. Putter and friends through hands-on activities, drawing, writing, and active discussion.

Weeks four and five: Students will continue falling in love with these funloving characters through a multimedia approach to book clubbing. Students will also learn about how Cynthia Rylant always manages to incorporate her love of animals into her books. Possible titles we may read are Mr. Putter and Tabby Walk the Dog and Mr. Putter and Tabby Feed the Fish.

Week six: The Mr. Putter and Tabby Read Aloud Book Club wrap up celebration! Students will get to share their favorite Mr. Putter and Tabby moments and use their artistic skills and knowledge of the series to create a book cover for their own Mr. Putter and Tabby story!

Learning Goals

Students will improve their understanding of a narrative text through discussion of characters, plot, and author's craft.

Other Details

Supply List
I will be reading aloud five books from the Mr. Putter and Tabby series by Cynthia Rylant. See the list below. It is NOT necessary for each student to have a copy of each title as I will be reading aloud for our young readers. I am providing a list if you would like your child to have his or her own copy for their home libraries!
*Mr. Putter and Tabby Pour the Tea
*Mr. Putter and Tabby Take the Train
*Mr. Putter and Tabby Bake the Cake
*Mr. Putter and Tabby Walk the Dog
*Mr. Putter and Tabby Feed the Fish

Also please make sure your child comes to class with a notebook or paper to write on, a pencil, and crayons. If your child will be using loose paper, please make sure they have a folder to keep all their work organized.

For our last session, you may want to provide your child with additional art supplies (markers, color pencils, scissors, colorful paper, glue, etc) as they will be creating their own book covers!

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Andrea Klein and I have been a public school teacher for 20 years! I primarily teach Kindergarten through 5th grade and specialize in teaching English as a Second Language.

I love learning languages so teaching language is my passion. I teach English to non-native English speakers. I also love to run book clubs using the classics: Charlotte's Web, The Secret Garden etc. to get children really thinking about literature and develop a love for reading.

Children learn when they feel nurtured and safe. My primary goal with any student is to develop a connection with them so that they become students who have the desire to learn and grow. I have learned during my career that children are willing to take risks when this connection is fostered and they trust you!

I was born and raised in New York City by two amazing immigrant parents. My father was an incredible Irishman who worked hard to make sure we had a happy life! My mom is a fierce Latina woman who taught me the importance of education and standing on my own two feet! I am married and now have two daughters of my own and two pups who follow me around everywhere I go! We love the outdoors and exploring new places. Our happy place is the beach of course and we try to get away as much as we can when the weather permits.
