In this 6-week course, students will read a fiction chapter book, and strengthen their non-fiction reading skills
Class experience
US Grade 2 - 5
Students will study the novel "Mr. Lemoncello's Library Olympics" by Chris Grabenstein in a group setting. They will practice writing short responses that express their thoughts using the text and strengthen their reading skills--especially in non-fiction. How is the class structured? Students will practice forming opinions about fictional text. Students will practice answering questions, both comprehension and opinion-based, in written and oral form. Students will improve their understanding of non-fiction text. Students will practice reading a variety of non-fiction texts. Students will practice reading comprehension of a chapter-novel fictional text.
Homework Offered
Students will receive chapters to read, short assignments, and an end-of-novel project.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class

Students will receive PDFs to print and bring to class. Students will also need basic writing utensils. For the project, the objects needed will depend on what the student selects. There is a wide variety of options, some of which require no more than a standard piece of paper and crayons or colored pencils.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
We will use the novel, along with non-fiction articles, and primary source photos related to advertisements from the past and present.
