Moving "Write" Along - Increasing Confidence and Creativity in Writing
Class experience
US Grade 5 - 8
In this 13-week class, resistant writers will practice using the steps in the writing process to break assignments into manageable chunks. This is such an important skill to learn so that the "brain chaos" doesn't take over, a skill used across many facets of life. We will improve our writing through discussion, feedback, and hands-on experience. Our topics will all be creative in nature, but very open-ended. Students should have a general idea of how to structure a sentence and a paragraph...
Learners will leave the class having a better understanding of their own writing style and increased confidence in their abilities. They will have also practiced how to break down writing assignments to avoid overwhelm.
I am a homeschooling mom of five kids, ranging in age from ten to nineteen. We are diving into our 6th year of homeschooling and we love it. I have a passion for both education and creativity and I love combining the two whenever I can. When I'm not teaching (my kids or someone else's), I run a business based purely on creativity and art. Traveling (and 8 years of formal classes) gave me a handle on the Spanish language. I have a background in general education from 19 years of combined experience teaching in public and charter school settings, as well as tutoring one on one, ESL, and running various camps and activities. My experience ranges from childcare (infant) age all the way through high school age and includes work with neurodiverse and special needs students, as well as students with mental health issues. I have a passion for, and educational background in Graphic Art/Design, however, my degrees are AA in Liberal Studies and a BA in General Studies with a concentration in Psychology. I am also TESOL certified.
Homework Offered
Homework will be assigned each week so that students can review and practice the skills that were learned in that week's class. This homework should take approximately 15-20 minutes per day, spread over the week. Since we are practicing breaking down assignments, I would like students to take breaks at various points during the writing process. If students have questions regarding the homework, I encourage them to post in our classroom or message me directly, so that I can provide an explanation. I like my students to know that I am reachable through the platform outside of our scheduled class time.Assessments Offered
While I will offer feedback on homework, I do not provide letter grades. At the end of the 13 weeks, I will provide overall feedback and a certificate of completion.Grades Offered
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Students will be using Google docs and Google drive during this class. While these are Outschool-approved resources, parents should know that students will need their own (free) account. Students should NOT share their Google information, we will share work through direct links. Each student will receive a unique-to-them link from me during our first session. All work and direct feedback will be on that document. Please be advised: -All recommendations and assessments made during these classes are my own and based on my own experience and education. They are not reflective of Outschool, as I am an independent contractor.
