Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 1
Beginner Level
Students in this class will need to know their letter sounds to begin decoding words. We will begin each class with a phonics song to review letter sounds and engage our brains. Afterwards, the word family of the week will be revealed. We will then "get moving with our sounds" using Elokin boxes with theme of month and manipulatives (cars, legos, buttons) to guide us in sounding out words. I will provide mats each month along with suggested manipulative .The brain and body work together as a machine, the brain-body connection and movement are very important to your ability to learn and master reading skills.
We will begin with short a and work our way through the vowels. Each week, I will introduce a new word family. This will help build reading and rhyming fluency Rhyming words are words that sound the same at the end of the word. Some of our words will be nonsense words to really focus on decoding. Are we making sounds of word to help us read? This is an important skill. Nonsense words follow predictable phonetic patterns. If students have learned the common sounds of the words, they can reveal the depth of their learning in a quick assessment. Assessing nonsense words gives you an idea of what the student might need to work on next.
Towards the end class , we will write words a few words from our word family list of the week. Reading and writing go hand in hand.
I will also share these word lists in the classroom along with songs that we practiced each week for more practice.

Hello!
My name is Amy Woldt. I have a Bachelor's of Science in Education with a Major in Early Childhood with certification in ESL and Gifted and Talented. I have taught kindergarten and preschoolers for 29 years. During this time I worked with different kind of learners. I have created scaffolded lessons to meet the needs of all my learners, since we all learn differently. With my ESL and Early Childhood expertise, I was lead to teach on another platform teaching English 2018-present to young students. I enjoyed teaching on this type of platform and decided to join the Outschool platform in the Spring of 2020 after retiring from public education. I also tutor reading to two elementary students in person after school.
I am a mom to two boys 19 and 26 and a twelve year old pug, who thinks he's human.
Outside of the classroom, I enjoy traveling, watching movies and swimming with my husband.

I believe that all students can learn under the right guidance, structure and creative learning activities. I hope to see your student in my classroom soon.
