Join us for a weekly journey through the pages of Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan, where each session offers an opportunity to discuss and dissect a new portion of the book.

"Esperanza thought she'd always live with her family on their ranch in Mexico--she'd always have fancy dresses, a beautiful home, and servants. But a sudden tragedy forces Esperanza and Mama to flee to California during the Great Depression, and to settle in a camp for Mexican farm workers. Esperanza isn't ready for the hard labor, financial struggles, or lack of acceptance she now faces. When their new life is threatened, Esperanza must find a way to rise above her difficult circumstances--Mama's life, and her own, depend on it."


Each week, you'll be in charge of reading 2-3 chapters outside of class to be ready to discuss and analyze together! Whether you're new to talking about books you're enjoying or love to give detailed descriptions after every read, this class is for you. Although our discussions are student-led, I will be there to ensure our environment is safe for everyone and provide thought-provoking guidance for our conversations. 

Our schedule would look like this:
Week 1: Meet and Greet! We will get to know the members of our book club, establish rules that suit the group, and develop goals for our time together. You are not expected to start reading your book before this class but you are expected to have it! AFTER this class, read chapters 1, 2 and 3 (37 pages) before the next class. 
Week 2: Discuss Chapters 1, 2, and 3. Read chapters 4 and 5 (41 pages) before the next class. 
Week 3: Discuss Chapters 4 and 5. Read chapters 6 and 7 (39 pages) before the next class.
Week 4: Discuss Chapters 6 and 7. Read chapters 8, 9, and 10 (57 pages) before the next class.
Week 5: Discuss Chapters 8, 9, and 10. Read chapters 11 and 12 (34 pages) before the next class.
Week 6: Discuss Chapters 11 and 12. Read chapters 13 and 14 (39 pages) before the next class.
Week 7: Discuss Chapters 13 and 14 and the overall opinion of the book!
