Class Experience

***This class is part of the Movie Bites Learning - Young Storytellers and Aspiring Moviemakers Series. These classes can be taken in any order and are designed to celebrate and encourage big imaginations. Very my full profile for details on other Movie Bites Learning classes.***

Screenwriters dream of walking into a live, 3-dimensional version of the stories they have created in their mind and on the page. Set Designers have the exciting job of helping to bring those spaces to life. All the scenery, furniture and props the audience sees in a film production make up the set design. The set designer's job is to design these physical surroundings in which the action will take place. Their art must suggest the style and tone of the film, create mood and atmosphere, give clues as to the specific time and place of the action, and offer creative possibilities for the movement and grouping of the actors.

Using the Academy Award winning production design in Hugo (2011) as our inspiration, our class will learn about, and create, design plans and sketches that showcase the spaces in which their story character will live. Then, through brainstorming games, writing exercises and an art activity, students will increase their storytelling abilities and build a Set Design Diorama that captures their character's film world space.
