Class Experience

***This class is part of the Movie Bites Learning - Young Storytellers and Aspiring Moviemakers Series. These classes can be taken in any order and are designed to celebrate and encourage big imaginations. Very my full profile for details on other Movie Bites Learning classes.***

Sound design for films is often overlooked, but is so important to the movie watching experience.

For example: You're sitting on your couch, eating popcorn and watching a Friday night thriller when a train comes chugging through the scene. You may not realize it, but the sound you hear coming through your TV speakers is most likely not an actual train, but was instead created with something as simple as a box of macaroni. Your ears don't notice the difference and - THAT - is the magic of Foley Art!

Foley Art is a unique sound effect technique that involves creating and “performing” everyday sounds for movies and television shows. Foley artists use common objects to reproduce everyday sounds like thunderstorms, waves crashing, cars passing by, punches, kicks, wind blowing, doors slamming, and...trains chugging. These artists create sounds that meld so seamlessly with onscreen images that they go unnoticed, as though they were there from the start.

In this hands-on class, students will learn a brief history of foley art, practice creating sound effects with common household items, and work with their classmates to create a "sound scene." Fantastic foley art fun from beginning to end!

Device Note: Though tablet users can participate, due to sound settings, this class does work best for students who can join on a laptop or desktop computer.

Movie Bites Learning is a welcoming, diverse and inclusive environment. Big imaginations, high energy, shy learners, and wigglers are always encouraged. The club provides a variety of ways for students to engage with the lessons so that different learning styles are respected, supported, appreciated and celebrated.
