Class Experience
Students will learn about three types of dances- Samba, African, and Salsa. They will learn about these dances through a brief teacher lecture, as well as learning dance moves from each of these cultures which will be put together in a short and fun routine. For some of the dances, I will share the traditional drumming rhythm used to dance to them, using my drums at home. I will also share what countries the dances come from, as well as the cultural meanings and significance of them where...
Students will explore new ways to express through dance and movement, gain an understanding of different cultures around the world, and also improve their coordination, strength, and spatial awareness.
I first began dancing in 1998, and have loved it since! I began teaching dance in 2004, and have taught to children, youth, and adults. I have facilitated childrens' dance groups and classes, as well as created dance classes for afterschool programs. I also began performing dance in 1998, mainly Brazilian, circus arts, and world dance. My most extensive training is in Brazilian dance, studying with teachers from Brazil for over twenty years. I also am experienced in Brazilian music, and have performed in a Brazilian drum troupe. Soon I will also teach a Brazilian percussion class. I am currently a licensed Zumba instructor, and I am almost complete with a 200 hour yoga teacher training and SEL/mindfulness certification course through Breathe for Change. I am passionate about giving children and youth the tools to express themselves through movement and have fun and get exercise while doing so. I also love to teach, and have been a teacher and education since 1998 as well, both in and out of the school system. I am currently a Special Education teacher.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
In this class, students will be engaged in physical activity. I recommend for students to stay safe and comfortable to either dance barefoot on a floor with a rug, or, with comfortable shoes appropriate for dancing, such as tennis shoes, if it is a floor with a hard surface. Also, please have a cup of water or water bottle handy, and do a quick check of your dance space area before class to ensure there are no objects that can be tripped over. Also, if you can, please do some stretching before class or jogging in place to warm up your body, and we will also begin the class with some stretching and warm up activities.
