Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 6
Welcome to Move Up, Reading Level! I am so glad you're here!

This class is perfect for students of all reading levels and ages. If your preferred time or day isn't listed, please message me and we will find a convenient slot.

Functioning similarly to a traditional guided reading group, this class meets for 30 minutes once a week. We will cycle through word work, fluency, accuracy, and comprehension activities that strengthen the phonics skills needed to improve in reading. The materials and activities will evolve as your student progresses, providing the right level of challenge to grow without causing frustration.

Class Cycle Overview:
The first lesson will involve an assessment to determine each learner's independent reading level and a phonics assessment to identify the skills they need to practice. These same assessments will be administered during the final session to document how the learner has grown.

Between the initial and final assessments, classes will focus on cycling through word work, fluency, accuracy, and comprehension activities and lessons. The specific activities will be aligned to improve each student's reading level.

1. Phonics-Based Activities: We will start by choosing a specific skill to focus on. Students will interact with words that reinforce the chosen skill. Examples include:
- Building and deconstructing words based on their sounds.
- Changing letters in one word to create another.
- Creating nonsense words that follow the targeted phonics pattern.
- "Coding" words based on their letters and sounds.

2. Reading Practice: Students will practice reading sentences or stories containing words that align with the chosen skill. During these sessions, students will be encouraged to read accurately and fluently. Lessons could be:
- Self-correcting when encountering something that doesn't make sense.
- Using punctuation to enhance understanding.
- Reading with expression.
- Avoiding skipping words or altering the text.

3. Comprehension Activities: Students will be asked questions to ensure they understand the meaning of the text, not just the words. Most of these activities will involve writing about what they are reading, reinforcing the phonics skills from earlier in the lesson cycle. Depending on their level, activities may include:
- Retelling the story.
- Predicting what will happen next.
- Making inferences about the lesson the author intended to convey.
- Creating an alternate ending to the story.

4. Informal Assessment: Once a student demonstrates understanding of the new skill, they will undergo an informal assessment to determine if they have mastered it sufficiently to move forward. This quick check with the teacher will typically involve a mix of activities from the lesson cycle to gauge their understanding. If a student continues to struggle, we will revisit the areas needing improvement and repeat the cycle until mastery is achieved. Upon mastering a skill, we will start the cycle over with a different skill.

Class Experience:
- Engaging Presentations: Each session is guided by a structured PowerPoint to keep us on track.
- Multi-Sensory Learning: We use a blend of words, images, and videos to enhance understanding.
- Interactive Discussions: Our classes encourage active participation and Q&A between the teacher and student.
- Hands-On Activities: After introducing new topics, students engage in guided activities followed by independent practice.
- Personalized Pace: We advance to new topics based on each student’s progress, ensuring a thorough understanding.
- Celebrating Achievements: Each class concludes with a fun activity to celebrate the students' hard work and progress.

The number of skills covered and the amount of growth achieved will depend on each student's individual learning style and pace. Students are encouraged to continue with more classes if they are progressing and enjoying the learning process.

Join these engaging lessons and watch your learner's reading level soar!
