Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
This class will tie major 20th century historical events together with vivid imagery of motorcycles manufactured around the globe. We will chronologically explore historical and sociological themes and how motorcycles fit into events and lifestyles of people in the USA, Europe and Asia. 
The class will include videos, slides and lecture with time for students to ask questions. Each class session will have a posted handout with information, a time-line for students to fill out and take notes in class.
This class begins with the Second Industrial Revolution and the first gasoline powered motorcycles developed in Europe and the USA. Students will remember and deepen understanding of historical events through their relationship with motorcycles.
•	In the first class meeting we will discuss the first gasoline powered motorcycle, Gottlieb Daimler, the beginnings of Triumph Motorcycles, Harley-Davidson, and the role of motorcycles in World War 1.
•	In the second class meeting we will discuss the impact of the Great Depression on the motorcycle industry. We will discuss BMW, Harley-Davidson and Ural motorcycles in World War 2.
•	In the third class meeting we will discuss post-war reconstruction, emerging industry in Italy and Japan – Ducatis, Hondas and more. We will discuss motorcycles’ emerging counter-cultural image in the USA. 
•	In the last class meeting we will discuss the growing popularity of motorcycles from Japan in the 1970s-1990s. Harley-Davidson’s struggles and resurgence in the 1990s and the high-end motorcycles from Europe such as Ducati and BMW.
