45 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
We will be discussing seven different disgusting animals and the defense mechanisms they use against predators. The students will watch engaging videos of the animals using their gross strategies of protection. Students will also learn basic facts about each animal. The class is structured in a format that allows a great deal of discussion and questions. The students will be engaged throughout with the use of exciting videos and vibrant pictures. I will be presenting the information in a slide format with the use of video. I am high energy and love it when kids get excited about what they are learning. I'm the type of person that cracks jokes and enjoys finding that one child that gets the punchline. I like to teach topics that are out of the ordinary and not something that kids would learn in the regular classroom. This lesson will involve vomit, a little bit of blood, and even some guts. So students should be into the icky, sticky, and gooey things in life.
Learning Goals
-Students will learn about five specific animal defense mechanisms that are out of the ordinary.
-Students will learn basic facts about each animal.
-Students will learn about two additional disgusting animals and their unique contributions to our world.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Animal defense mechanisms in this lesson involve blood, vomit, and guts. Students will only be exposed to appropriate videos but the videos will show the animal defense mechanisms in action. So if your child does not like gross things... this is not the class for them. My personal seven-year-old experienced my lesson on this topic and he loved it. He was totally into the gross and unique ways the animals protected themselves and helped our world.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, I have been a public school teacher for 16 years and a virtual teacher for 3 years. I love learning about new and exciting things. My favorite things to learn about are animals, history, and strange facts.
I have a Bachelor's and Master's degree in education and I believe that learning should be engaging. My lessons incorporate a variety of techniques varying from discussions, videos, pictures, and lectures. I encourage a great deal of communication and questions during my lessons.
All of my lessons have been tested on my own children for their ability to obtain the interest level of students between 6-13. (I'm not sure if my personal children appreciate being my "testers" or not lol) I know how hard it is to hold a child's attention for a long period of time so I focus on teaching topics that kids will find interesting. I like to create lessons about topics students will not learn about in their regular classrooms.
