Class Experience

Students will be able to participate in discussions around a given book series.
Students will make connections between the books, as well as between the books and the real world.
I have been a classroom teacher for 16 years. Most of that time has been spent teaching middle grade students. I have taught book clubs and novel studies every year that I've been a teacher, and successfully on Outschool as well. I believe that students learn comprehension skills organically through reading versus practicing them as stand alone topics. This is why book clubs help students become better readers! They aren't always looking for just one thing, they can see how they all work together to build worlds.
Students should have read all 3 books BEFORE joining the book club.
Students will need to have access to a printer to print activities prior to class starting
General crafting supplies: scissors, glue, crayons/markers/scissors, paper
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
2 hours 15 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
I always encourage families to preview the books prior to joining a book club. Here is the Common Sense Media review of the books: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/search/morrigan%20crow
Here is the publisher's website for the author and her books: https://www.hachette.com.au/jessica-townsend/

Please note, that students will be doing crafts and STEM activities during camp, so there is the possibility for small injuries caused by use of crafting supplies. If the camper is unable to use scissors and glue on their own, parental or adult supervision during those camp times would be required.

About Me

Hi there! My name is Kathryn Voss. I've been a classroom teacher and tutor for fifteen years in Virginia and Arizona!

I believe that all humans have the capacity to learn, but they don't all learn the same way. Many schools focus on one method...
