What is mindfulness? Mindfulness is the act of being fully aware of the present moment. Why practice mindfulness? While the act of being present comes very naturally to young children, this also means they do not know how to use their "mindfulness" muscles in moments of distress. Setting aside time to practice mindfulness is designed to develop this vital life skill until it can be automatically retrieved, or channeled, when necessary. How will we practice mindfulness? At each gathering, we will practice techniques such as breath work, meditation, listening activities, physical movements (from yoga to tai chi to dancing), and music. What to expect: Each class will begin with a greeting and check-in, followed by 3-4 of the techniques listed above. Often, mindfulness will include prompt questions to engage learners in conversation and help personalize the practices for them. The first class each week may introduce new practices and the second class will be used to reaffirm the weeks practices. Who is the teacher? Amethyst Stark teaches mindfulness, growth mindset, and spiritual practices (spiritual practices WILL NOT be taught in this class) at Creative Living Fellowship in Phoenix, AZ. She is also a piano teacher and mother of two. She has been studying mindfulness practices for 15 years and takes great joy in sharing them with youth, while learning from them all they have to offer. How does Amethyst teach? I am a very silly and open person (my students describe me as joyous). I always speak with supportive and positive language, to provide a safe space where my learners have feel free to express themselves, makes mistakes, and experience triumphs. I love a good joke and laughing as much as possible! Do we need mindfulness experience? Not at all! No experience, a ton of experience, and simply curiosity is all welcome. This is a great class for both parent and child for bonding and growth together.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have:
-a degree in music performance
-been studying piano since 1990
-teaching since 2009
-facilitated music therapy sessions with seniors and youth
-taught music and movement to in preschools
-Former certified Kindermusik instructor
My philosophy is that everyone should have access to music making. While I was formally trained and I also teach privately using many traditional methods, I believe that some the BEST music comes from just "goofing off" or "happy accidents". I LOVE listening to music so don't be surprised if I send you links to great songs during your time with me. Also, I love cartoons. I don't think that will ever change, so I'm grateful to have two sons that I can use to excuse my cartoon watching.
