Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 7
Beginner Level
I will teach students about several Norse gods and goddesses. We will explore their stories through the myths created about them.

*Schedule
Week 1: Overview of main gods & goddesses; The Norse creation story
Week 2: Loki's Children; Treasures of the Gods; The Lay of Alvis
Week 3: Balder's Dreams; The Death of Balder; The Binding of Loki
Week 4: Ragnarok; Norse Mythology's influence in our world today
*Also included will be information and stories about dwarves, elves, runes, and more.

I will begin each class session by asking students to share any knowledge about the topics they have. I will follow this with reading, lecture, and discussion time. I will also use slides and video clips in order to give visuals for the lessons. I encourage students to ask questions and share their thoughts with me and with one another.

I teach Literature, Writing, Poetry, Mythology, and Folklore classes for Middle and High School. I also teach a small selection of classes for elementary-aged students and preschoolers.

I have a BS in Elementary Education and a MA in English. I taught in the public school system for seven years. After having my third child, I chose not to return to my teaching position. This decision is what put us on the path toward homeschooling. I began homeschooling in 2006, and my last homeschooled child graduated in May 2021. My youngest child currently attends a local school designed for neurodivergent and disabled students.

I am the author of the book Mountains and Melancholy: A Collection of Poetry, and I am also a former author of one of the health blogs at HealthyPlace.com. I am a teacher member of the Folger Shakespeare Library.

I see myself as a partner in the student's learning process. I believe in student/teacher collaboration. I desire to ignite a fire within students so that they yearn for more rather than try to stuff them with facts that they will forget the minute they walk out the door or close the laptop. I see learning as a lifelong adventure, and I teach in a way that reflects that belief.

I have one dog and one cat. My dog is named after a Lord of the Rings character: Gandalf. My cat's name is Freyr (like the Norse god.) I love fall and Halloween, and all the things that come with them: cool temperatures, crisp air, vibrantly colored leaves, pumpkin spice, warm cider, dressing in costumes, trick-or-treating, and decorating my house -- I even have a Halloween tree. I am usually seen with coffee in one hand and a book in the other. Now you know a bit about me. I look forward to meeting you in one of my classes soon.
