Class Experience

In this lesson on fractions we will dive deeper into more than just 1/2. Children will actively participate in discussion and hands on activity to develop a better understanding of fractions. The children may have already learning about 1/2 in their math studies, but as we work on fractions they will gain more insight into dividing shapes further. I will also be asking the children to use paper, pencil or markers and white boards to display shapes and dividing them into equal parts. If scissors and paper are available we will cut out shapes and divide them into equal parts.

Learning Goals

Students will gain a batter understanding of many different fractions.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Greetings! My name is Rachel and I have been teaching Kindergarten for the past 35 years in a public school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I’ve done the math and if you figure 30 children a year for 35 years, that's approximately 1,050 little minds that I have molded, and 1,050 little people that have made me the person and teacher I am today! Many of my past students have kept in touch with me over the years: I’ve been invited to their weddings, met their children, and mentored many who have gone on to become teachers themselves!
I teach in a self-contained, full day Kindergarten class without an aide and pride myself on classroom management skills. I love when the children take pride in their accomplishments, and I enjoy seeing their growth as the year progresses. Each child is unique, and it is my belief that teaching needs to be tailored to their individual needs. While this year has been completely virtual for my class, I have been able to maintain my objective: to help my students adapt and thrive.
My goal as an Outschool instructor is to help your child or children (I welcome siblings!) be as prepared as they possibly can when entering the Kindergarten classroom, whether in your home or in a traditional school. Drawing from my experience, I will provide them with the tools they will need on the first day and beyond.
If your child is currently in Kindergarten, I will provide supplemental work and enrichment in a small setting. Whether you feel as though your child is needing more support or is not being challenged enough, I will work with them to meet their needs.
On a more personal note, I have two daughters, one son, and one son-in-law. I love my children dearly, and four years ago I became acquainted with a new love, the love of a grandchild! Being a "Ray-Ray" is the best! If I'm not going on and on about my grandson, I can be found taking pictures. I love photography and traveling!
I am looking forward to working with your child and sharing the joy and excitement of learning!
