More Love, Less Hate: Protest Art Camp
Class experience
Take action. Share your message. Build safer communities. Join us all week during this August camp. After learning a brief history of protest art, we will dive into making our Protest Stones. Our class meets for 75 minutes, long enough to finish a rock (or several) each class. We will talk and hang out while we work. You can expect to be welcomed as yourself, while getting to know new friends. Important note: Check out the supply list and make sure you have time to order or pick up...
I am an experienced educator and activist. Whether in the classroom, doing citywide health education work, at summer camps, with my own family and beyond - I work to help young people find their voice and power. I have a Masters in Community Health Education from the City University of New York. I have 25 years of experience with 15 years in citywide education including classroom teaching and central office support. I started doing activist and advocacy work as a teenager in the wake of the AIDS epidemic. I made a lifelong commitment to fighting for an end to oppression. I have formal training in anti-racism education and design any race-based workshops in consultation with Black educators and activists.
You will need some supplies for this class. ROCKS: - Minimum 6 rocks, approximately palm sized. - If you might want to make several rocks in each style (for ex: 6 Black Lives Matter stones). If so, you will need more rocks PAINT/DECORATING - Acrylic paint in a variety of standard colors - Brush set with at least 1-2 tiny brushes - Acrylic sealer spray - (optional) Paint pens - (optional) Mod Podge Waterbased Sealer - (optional) Sharpie pens ** Here is an Amazon link showing some inexpensive versions of the above materials. I offer them to be helpful - I have no affiliation with these products: https://amzn.to/2ZGk6pb PAINTING PROCESS - Cup of water for washing brushes - Paper towel for blotting brushes dry - Pen or pencil and paper for sketching out ideas - Scrap paper or tray for protecting your work surface - Surface to paint on - ex: tabled lined with newspaper, paper plates, etc
In this camp, we will be discussing sociopolitical topics and current events on the following themes - Black Lives Matter, Trans-inclusive Feminism, Gender and Sexual Identity, Climate Change and more (depending upon issues learners raise). I will share a brief 5-10 minute overview of the theme area and focus. The information shared will be general and informative - defining terms, offering popular context for the movement, sharing reasoning for dissenting opinions. While we create the stones, I will help facilitate discussion that encourages each child to share their thinking, have a chance to hear thoughts from others, feel valued, and be able to shine. As an experienced health educator, I use my facilitation skills to draw out the thinking of the young people in the group, and refer them back to their most important educators in their lives - their family and community members. If you or your child are interested in this class and want to clarify any questions or concerns about the subject matter, please do not hesitate to reach out. I am aware that the values expressed in these activities are not shared by everyone and therefore this camp would not be a good choice for all young people or families. I look forward to having your child join us if it is a good fit.
