Montessori Style Math - Carry-over Addition with Foam Squares
This lesson using manipulatives will lead to grasping and then crystallization of the concept of dynamic (carrying over) addition.
I have created this lesson using the Montessori Stamp Game as an inspiration and will be teaching students to add up larger quantities ( two, three and four-digit quantities) that include carrying over, using primary colored foam squares. For this particular class, I will provide a short lesson and then have some time aside for questions to be asked or doubts to be cleared. I am positive that a 50-minute duration will be enough time for students to follow the lesson, practice a few examples...
This lesson is very hands-on as using primary-colored foam squares, students will easily be able to add up two, three and four-digit quantities including carrying over very easily.
With my observation and 10 years of teaching experience using the Montessori Method specifically children aged 6 to 9, this lesson has been one of the favorite lessons of children and has helped a lot of children who were initially struggling with his particular concept. I feel after having presented this lesson I would be able to set the children up for success.
I will be providing follow up work for the lesson Parents will need to provide the following (I have provided the Amazon links if you want to purchase them, or you might already have some of these supplies at home too to create your own using simple colored paper) *small foam squares (can be used for other Montessori classes as well) https://www.amazon.com/ETA-hand2mind-Assorted-Counters-Patterns/dp/B016DUZWYO/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=small+foam+squares&qid=1586361082&refinements=p_85%3A2470955011&rnid=2470954011&rps=1&sr=8-1 NOTES *Please label as follows with a sharpie before arriving for the lesson, 15 green squares with the numeral "1" each 15 blue squares with "10" each 15 red squares with "100" each Another 15 green squares with "1000" each *The above mentioned product contains squares of 4 primary colors but we will need only red, blue and green *graph paper (squares should be atleast 1cm x 1 cm) https://www.amazon.com/Nasco-TB25325T-Squares-Sheets-Grades/dp/B00EJSOWJO/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=graph+paper+1cm&qid=1586361922&refinements=p_85%3A2470955011&rnid=2470954011&rps=1&s=industrial&sr=1-1 *red, royal blue and dark green colored pencils *pencil, sharpener, eraser and ruler
