Montessori Online Work Period - Sensorial: Developing the 5 Senses (Ages 3-6)

Class
Play
Encourages young learners to organize and develop their 5 senses as they begin taking in and understanding the world around them.

Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - Kindergarten
  • Children will learn about the body parts associated with each of the five senses. Through interactive activities, they will understand how their senses work and how they help them explore the world around them.
  • Children will refine their ability to distinguish between different attributes such as size, shape, color, texture, and temperature. Through sorting and categorizing tasks, they will enhance their perception and concentration skills.
  • Children will engage in tactile activities to explore various textures and temperatures. They will learn to describe these sensations with precise vocabulary, enhancing their sensory awareness and language development.
  • Using scent jars with a variety of aromas, children will refine their sense of smell. They will learn to identify and differentiate scents, building a richer olfactory vocabulary.
  • Taste tests with different foods will help children recognize and describe a range of flavors. This will expand their taste vocabulary and improve their ability to articulate sensory experiences.
  • Sound discrimination activities, including recognizing variations in pitch, tone, and volume, will sharpen children's auditory perception. Using sound cylinders and musical instruments, they will learn to distinguish subtle differences in sounds.
  • Children will engage in activities that involve distinguishing between colors, patterns, and shapes to sharpen their visual perception. These exercises will help them enhance their ability to notice and describe visual details.
  • Children will explore basic geometry concepts, developing their stereognostic sense by identifying shapes through touch. This hands-on learning approach will enhance their spatial awareness and tactile perception.

A weekly material list will be provided to you prior to the class, in preparation for the following week of classes. Learners are responsible for having the listed materials on hand and printed worksheets ready. If learners are missing a material, alternative suggestions can be provided. Classes will typically require commonly found household items or stationary such as: pencil, eraser, highlighter, scissors, stapler, glue etc.
Parental guidance and support may sometimes be required to supervise young learners. We may need help using various stationary items (i.e., scissors, stapler etc.), or preparing materials before class.
