Class Experience

US Grade 3
We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada.

In the grade 3 Vocabulary class, students will focus on developing their understanding and usage of vocabulary through various strategies and exercises. They will learn to analyze word structures, determine meanings using context clues and dictionaries, explore shades of meaning, and recognize idiomatic expressions. The class aims to enhance their overall language proficiency and comprehension. By focusing on these topics and teaching methods, the class aims to empower students with a robust vocabulary foundation that supports their academic success and lifelong language skills. Topics covered include:

- Word Study: Students will delve into word families, prefixes, suffixes, and roots to understand how words are formed and their meanings altered.

- Determining Word Meanings with (able) or (ment): They will learn about common suffixes like "-able" and "-ment" and how these suffixes change the meaning of base words.

- Multiple Meaning Words and Shades of Meaning: Students will explore words with multiple meanings and nuances in meaning, understanding how context influences interpretation.

- Positive and Negative Connotation: They will differentiate between positive, negative, and neutral connotations of words, understanding the emotional impact of word choice.

- Idioms: Students will learn common idiomatic expressions and their figurative meanings, recognizing how idioms contribute to effective communication.

- Context Clues: Techniques for using surrounding text to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words will be practiced, enhancing reading comprehension.

- Reference Skills: Students will be taught how to use various reference materials such as dictionaries, glossaries, and online resources to clarify word meanings.

- Use of Dictionary Definitions: They will learn strategies for effectively using dictionary definitions to understand word meanings and usage.

Class Structure:

The class will be structured around interactive and engaging activities that cater to students. Each session will typically start with a review of previous concepts, followed by introducing new vocabulary topics through mini-lessons, group discussions, and hands-on exercises. Students will engage in vocabulary games, worksheets, and collaborative activities to reinforce learning.

I will use a variety of teaching methods such as direct instruction, guided practice, and independent exploration. Visual aids like charts, flashcards, and multimedia presentations will support learning. Role-playing, word games, and worksheets will make learning vocabulary enjoyable and memorable.

My teaching style is student-centered and interactive. I believe in fostering a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and exploring new concepts. I encourage active participation, critical thinking, and reflection on how vocabulary impacts their reading comprehension and writing skills.

Students will have many opportunities to interact with me through class discussions, group activities, and one-on-one feedback sessions. I will encourage peer collaboration as well. Students will actively engage in discussions about word meanings, share their interpretations of texts, and apply vocabulary strategies in real-world contexts.
Learning Goals
Students will expand their vocabulary by learning new words, understanding their meanings. They will learn to apply them in contextually appropriate ways in both spoken and written communication.
Students will identify multiple meaning words, shades of meaning, idioms, and positive/negative connotations. They will improve in their ability to choose words effectively for different purposes and audiences and will enhance their language fluency.
