Class Experience

US Grade 1
We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada.

In the grade 1 Vocabulary class, students will build foundational language skills essential for effective communication and comprehension. The class aims to foster a strong foundation in language skills by immersing students in interactive learning experiences that build their ability to understand, use, and appreciate words effectively. Through structured lessons, engaging activities, and supportive teaching practices, students will develop confidence in their vocabulary acquisition and application, setting the stage for future academic success. Topics covered include:

- Parts of speech: They will learn to identify and understand basic categories such as nouns and adjectives.

- Word Study (suffix, prefix, synonyms, antonyms, multiple meaning words): Students will explore how adding prefixes and suffixes can change the meaning of words. They will also learn about synonyms (words with similar meanings) and antonyms (words with opposite meanings), as well as words that have multiple meanings depending on context.

- Shades of Meaning and Context Clues: They will learn to discern subtle differences in word meanings and use context clues (information from the surrounding text) to understand unfamiliar words.

- Referencing skills: Students will practice using dictionaries, glossaries, and other reference materials to find word meanings and gather information.

Class structure:

The class is structured to be engaging and interactive. We will warm up with vocabulary games or short exercises to activate prior knowledge, introduce new concepts and vocabulary through teacher-led instruction and demonstration, discussions, and engaging student's in group work or independent tasks that reinforce learning, such as sorting words, parts of the speech or using context clues.

My teaching method will include visual aids, interactive activities, modelling and demonstrations, and activities that support all learning needs.

My teaching style is supportive and student-centered. I like to create a positive learning environment where students feel comfortable taking risks and exploring new vocabulary, guide student's through discovery and exploration of words and their meanings, and provide feedback and opportunities for self-assessment to promote continuous improvement.

Students will interact actively with me and their peers through regular class discussions, collaborative tasks, question and answer sessions, and during feedback sessions.

Learning Goals

Students will learn to use basic referencing skills to find the meanings of unfamiliar words in dictionaries, glossaries, and digital resources. They will be able to independently use references to clarify word meanings in their reading and writing.
Students will explore and comprehend relationships between words, including synonyms, antonyms, and words with multiple meanings. They will apply this knowledge to their written work with some support.
