Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten
We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada.

In the Kindergarten Reading Strategies class, the focus is on introducing students to foundational skills that enhance their ability to comprehend and engage with stories and other texts. This early exposure sets the stage for developing critical thinking and literacy skills essential for future academic success. Student's will be taught fundamental skills for analyzing texts, including:

- Identifying characters: Recognizing who the main characters are in stories and understanding their roles.
- Describing settings: Noticing where and when stories take place and how settings contribute to the plot.
- Finding the main idea: Understanding the central message or main events of a story.
- Making predictions: Using clues from the text to guess what might happen next.
- Making connections: Relating the story to personal experiences, other books, or real-world events.

Additional topics covered include:

- Story elements: Teaching the components of a story such as characters, setting, plot, and theme.
- Sequencing events: Understanding the order of events in a story and their importance.
- Text features: Introducing basic elements like titles, headings, and illustrations that aid understanding.
- Drawing conclusions: Using information from the text to make logical guesses about what might happen.

Class Structure:

The class is structured to be interactive and engaging, accommodating the developmental needs of students. It includes interactive read-alouds where teachers read age-appropriate stories and ask questions to prompt discussion, small group activities where students participate in discussions or sequencing activities related to the story, and hands-on projects such as creating crafts, drawings, or simple writing activities based on story elements.

I will teach the class by modeling how to analyze a text through think-alouds and guiding questions, providing structured activities for guided practice where students apply analysis skills with teacher support, and using visual aids like charts, posters, or story maps to reinforce concepts and aid understanding.

My teaching style is nurturing and encouraging, fostering a positive learning environment where students feel empowered to explore and express their ideas. I create a warm and supportive space for students to share their thoughts and interpretations, encourage active participation through discussions, games, and hands-on activities, adapt lessons based on student responses and interests, and collaborate with families to support literacy development at home and in the community.

Learners will have frequent opportunities to interact with me through various methods such as, discussions, games and activities, and through slides and visual aids.
Learning Goals
