Class Experience

US Grade 3
We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada.

In the grade 3 Reading Strategies class, students will delve into various elements to deepen their understanding and analytical skills. In this class, students will explore text structures, literary devices, and point of view in literary texts. They will develop inference skills and analyze visual and story elements. Engaging with Level 1 and 2 literary and informational texts, students will enhance comprehension and critical analysis skills through a variety of reading strategies. Topics covered include:

- Literary Analysis: Students will learn to analyze and interpret literary texts by examining elements such as plot, character development, theme, and symbolism. They will practice identifying these elements and understanding how they contribute to the overall meaning and impact of the text.

- Text Structure: Students will explore different organizational structures in both literary and informational texts. They will learn to identify patterns such as chronological order, cause and effect, problem-solution, and compare-contrast, which helps them comprehend complex information more effectively.

- Literary Devices: Students will study figurative language techniques like simile, metaphor, personification, and symbolism. They will learn how authors use these devices to create imagery, evoke emotions, and convey deeper meanings in literature.

- Point of View: Students will analyze how the perspective from which a story is told (first-person and third-person) influences their understanding of characters, events, and themes in literary texts.

- Inference: Students will develop inferential skills by drawing conclusions based on textual evidence and their own background knowledge. They will learn to make educated guesses about characters' motivations, outcomes of events, and implicit meanings in texts.

- Visual and Story Elements: Students will examine visual elements (such as illustrations, charts, graphs) and story elements (like plot, setting, characterization) to deepen their comprehension and interpretation of texts.

- Literary Texts Level 1 and 2: Students will engage with literary texts at different levels of complexity. Level 1 texts focus on basic comprehension skills like summarizing and identifying main ideas, while Level 2 texts challenge students with more sophisticated analysis of characters, themes, and literary devices.

- Informational Texts Level 1 and 2: Students will build skills in reading and comprehending informational texts. Level 1 texts introduce basic concepts like identifying key details and text structures, while Level 2 texts require students to extract and evaluate information, analyze author's purpose, and distinguish between fact and opinion.
