Class Experience

US Grade 1
We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada.

In the grade 1 Reading Strategies class, students will learn foundational skills that enhance their comprehension and critical thinking abilities while exploring the distinctions between reality and fiction. The class aims to empower students with the skills needed to comprehend texts effectively, think critically, and distinguish between factual information and imaginative storytelling. Through interactive and supportive teaching methods, students will develop a strong foundation for lifelong reading success. In addition to comprehension skills, criticial thinking, and textual understanding, topics covered include:

- Main Idea: Understanding the central message or key points in a story or text.

- Inference and Analysis: Making logical guesses and examining details to uncover deeper meanings in stories.

- Reality vs. Fiction: Differentiating between factual information and imaginative elements in texts.

Class structure:

The class will be structured to engage students actively, beginning with interactive read-aloud sessions where I will read stories and prompt discussions on main ideas and real versus fictional elements. Students will participate in group activities to analyze stories, discuss findings, and practice inference skills. Hands-on exercises will help students distinguish between fact and fiction in texts, while independent reading will allow them to explore books individually and apply learned strategies to comprehend texts.

My teaching method will involve demonstrating how to identify main ideas and make inferences through examples and modeling, followed by guided practice with structured exercises where students find main ideas and discuss real versus fictional events. I will encourage exploration of different texts to identify and analyze key ideas and fictional elements, and provide constructive feedback to guide students' understanding and application of reading strategies.

My teaching style is supportive and interactive, fostering an environment where students feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and ideas. I adapt lessons based on student responses and needs to ensure comprehension, work collaboratively with students to explore stories and develop critical thinking skills, and celebrate their progress in understanding and analyzing texts.

Learners will interact regularly with me through class discussions on main ideas, inferences, and distinguishing reality from fiction; group work where they collaborate with peers to analyze texts and apply learned strategies; questioning to deepen their understanding of reading concepts; and feedback sessions where they receive guidance on their analysis and comprehension skills to support their growth as readers.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to identify the main idea of a story or text by focusing on key details. They will be able to identify and articulate the main idea of stories and texts they read independently.
Students will develop the ability to make simple inferences and analyze text to draw conclusions about characters, events, and settings. They will demonstrate proficiency in making basic inferences and explaining reasons using evidence from the text.
