US Grade 3
We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada. In the grade 3 Reading Foundations class, students will embark on a journey to strengthen their foundational reading skills through focused instruction and engaging activities. The class aims to provide students with the necessary skills and strategies to become confident and proficient readers, preparing them for more complex literacy tasks as they progress through their academic journey. Topics covered include phonics instruction focused on vowel sounds, consonant blends, diphthongs, and R-controlled vowels; word recognition strategies for effectively reading multisyllabic words; and practice with irregular words through sight word drills and contextual reading activities. A special focus will be on: - Short and Long Vowels and Blends: Mastery of vowel sounds (both short and long) and blends (consonant clusters like "bl," "br," "sc," etc.) to improve decoding skills. - Multisyllabic Words: Strategies for breaking down and reading multisyllabic words by recognizing syllable patterns and applying phonetic rules. - Diphthongs and R Vowel Patterns: Identification and pronunciation of diphthongs (e.g., "ou," "oi") and R-controlled vowel patterns (e.g., "ar," "or") to decode words accurately. - Irregular words: Recognition and memorization of irregular words (often sight words) that do not follow typical phonetic patterns but are commonly used in texts. Class Structure: The class will follow a structured approach to maximize learning, beginning with an introduction that reviews and introduces new concepts or skills. Students will then engage in guided practice activities, including reading passages, word recognition games, and phonics exercises. Finally, opportunities for independent work will be provided to reinforce the skills learned through individual reading and practice. My teaching method will be dynamic and interactive. I have use a variety of hands-on activities such as games, and technology to make learning phonics and word recognition engaging, demonstrate decoding strategies and providing examples of how to apply them in reading, and use appropriate worksheets to engage student interest. My teaching style will be supportive and encouraging, fostering a positive learning environment. I will promote active participation through discussions, group activities, and sharing of reading experiences and support students in taking risks and developing confidence in their reading abilities. Students will have many opportunities to interact with me and their peers through regular class discussions, feedback sessions, and collaborative activities.
Learning Goals
Students will identify and use diphthongs and R-controlled vowels in reading and writing, apply these patterns to spell words accurately. They will understand how these patterns contribute to meaning and fluency in oral and written communication.
Students will develop proficiency in recognizing and reading irregular words that do not follow common phonetic patterns. They will apply strategies to decode unfamiliar irregular words encountered in texts
