Class Experience

US Grade 5
We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada.

In the grade 5 Grammar and Mechanics class, students will delve into fundamental aspects of language to enhance their writing and communication skills. Structured around clear explanations, interactive activities, and practical applications, the course aims to cultivate a solid foundation in grammar while promoting active learning and student engagement. Through collaborative discussions and individual feedback, students will gain confidence in their writing abilities and develop a deeper understanding of how grammar enhances effective communication. Topics covered include:

Sentences, Fragments, and Run-ons: Students will learn to identify and correct sentence fragments (incomplete sentences) and run-on sentences (sentences with multiple independent clauses not properly separated or joined).

Parts of Speech: Students will understand the roles of nouns (person, place, thing), pronouns (replacing nouns), relative pronouns (connecting clauses), adjectives (describing nouns), prepositions (position or relationship), conjunctions (joining words or phrases), and subordinating conjunctions (introducing dependent clauses).

Verb Types and Subject-Verb Agreement: Students will differentiate between verb types (action, linking, helping) and ensure subject-verb agreement in sentences (matching singular subjects with singular verbs and plural subjects with plural verbs).

Fill in the Missing Correlative: Students will learn to complete sentences with correlative conjunctions (pairs like either...or, neither...nor, both...and) to maintain balance and clarity in their writing.

Contractions: They will recognize and use contractions (shortened forms like can't for cannot) appropriately in informal writing.

Capitalization, Formatting, and Punctuating Dialogue: Students will practice capitalizing proper nouns, beginning sentences, and using punctuation correctly within dialogue to indicate speech and maintain readability.

Commas with Compound and Complex Sentences: They will understand and apply comma rules in compound sentences (joining independent clauses with a comma and a coordinating conjunction) and complex sentences (using commas to separate clauses when a subordinating conjunction is present).

Class Structure:

The class will be structured with a blend of direct instruction, guided practice, and interactive activities. Each topic will begin with an explanation of the rules and concepts followed by examples to illustrate their application. Students will engage in hands-on exercises such as worksheets, writing prompts, and group discussions to reinforce their understanding and skills.

My teaching method will involve clear explanations of grammar rules and mechanics, supplemented with examples from literature and everyday language use. I will use visual aids to enhance comprehension. Interactive activities, including grammar games will be used to encourage active learning and application of concepts.

My teaching style is structured yet interactive. I believe in fostering a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and participating in discussions.

Students will have many opportunities to interact with me through class discussions, group activities, and one-on-one feedback sessions. I encourage active participation and provide constructive feedback to help students improve their grammar and writing skills effectively. This interaction fosters a deeper understanding of the material and promotes confidence in applying grammar rules in their own writing.

Learning Goals

Students will learn to distinguish between sentences, fragments, and run-ons. Through interactive exercises and examples, they will develop strategies to identify sentence fragments lacking a subject or predicate and correct run-on sentences.
Students will demonstrate proficiency in identifying and using nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions, conjunctions, and subordinating conjunctions correctly in their writing. They will learn to write structured sentences and in a logical order.
