Class Experience

US Grade 2
We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada.

Grade 2 students in this Grammar and Mechanics class will engage in foundational learning that supports their development in writing and understanding language rules. The class aims to provide students with foundational skills in writing, ensuring they can effectively communicate ideas through correct sentence structure, proper use of parts of speech, appropriate verb tense, punctuation, capitalization, and letter-writing etiquette. Topics covered include:

- Sentences, Fragments, and Run-ons: Understanding what makes a complete sentence, identifying fragments, and correcting run-on sentences.

- Parts of Speech: Recognizing and using nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs correctly in sentences.

- Verb Type and Tense: Differentiating between action verbs, linking verbs, and helping verbs, and using them in present, past, and future tenses.

- Contractions in a Sentence: Forming and using contractions (e.g., can't, don't) appropriately in writing.

- Commas: Learning basic comma rules such as using commas in lists, to separate items in a series, and in dates and addresses.

- Capitalization: Rules for capitalizing the first word of sentences, proper nouns (names of people, places, and things), and the pronoun "I."

- Greetings and Closing of Letters: Writing letters with appropriate greetings (Dear, Hello) and closings (Sincerely, Regards), and understanding the format and purpose of friendly and formal letters.

Class structure:

The class will be structured to provide a blend of direct instruction, guided practice, and interactive activities. Each lesson will be taught with an introduction to the grammar concept or mechanics rules, short lessons with examples and explanations, writing prompts will be provided, and editing tasks. In addition, I will provide students with feedback when appropriate.

My teaching method will involve a variety of instructional strategies such as modelling how to identify and correct sentence errors, use punctuation correctly, and write letters effectively, encourage peer collaboration through group activities and discussions, use games, worksheets, and online tools to reinforce learning and make grammar and mechanics engaging.

My teaching style will be interactive and supportive of inquiry-based learning. I will encourage my students to explore grammar concepts through discovery and hands-on activities, promote discussions where students can ask questions, share insights, and clarify doubts, and empower students to apply grammar and mechanics rules independently in their writing.

Students will have ample opportunities to interact with me and their peers through regular class discussions, group activities, or during one-on-one conversations during exercises.

Learning Goals

Students will learn to distinguish between complete sentences, fragments, and run-on sentences, and consistently produce complete sentences in their writing. They will practice identifying and correcting sentence fragments in their work.
Students will demonstrate proficiency in identifying and using nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs correctly in sentences to convey meaning effectively. They will apply their knowledge of grammar and add descriptive detail to their work.
