In this Grade 4 English Language Vocabulary class, students expand their understanding and usage of English words. They will explore word categories, practice matching sentences to definitions, and decipher idioms and adages. Students will also learn to interpret shades of meaning, understand connotations, and enhance their reference skills using a thesaurus. We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada. Topics covered include: - Word Study and Categories: Students will explore how words are grouped based on their meaning, function, and structure. - Which Sentence Matches the Definition?: They will learn strategies to identify the correct sentence that defines a given word or concept. - Idioms and Adages: Students will discover common idiomatic expressions and traditional sayings, understanding their figurative meanings. - Positive and Negative Connotation: They will differentiate between words with positive and negative associations, and how word choice affects tone. - Context Clues and Shades of Meaning: Students will practice using context to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words and understand subtle differences in meaning. - Reference Skills: They will learn how to use dictionaries, glossaries, and other reference materials effectively to find word meanings and information. - Use Thesaurus Entries: Students will learn to use thesauruses to find synonyms and antonyms, enriching their vocabulary and writing. Class Structure: The vocabulary class will be structured to engage students actively through various activities. Each session will typically begin with a brief introduction to the day's topic, followed by interactive exercises, group discussions, and individual practice. Students will engage in hands-on activities such as word games, worksheets, and reading passages that highlight different vocabulary strategies. My teaching method will be student-centered, focusing on fostering a deep understanding of words. Parental Guidance
Parental guidance and support may sometimes be required to supervise young learners. We may need help using various stationary items (i.e., scissors, stapler etc.), or preparing materials before class.
Supply List
A weekly material list will be provided to you prior to class, in preparation for the following week of classes. Learners are responsible for having the listed materials on hand and printed worksheets ready. If learners are missing a material, alternative suggestions can be provided. Classes will typically require commonly found household items or stationary such as: pencil, eraser, highlighter, scissors, stapler, glue etc.
