Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 1
In this one time class, your learner will practice using the Montessori golden beads math material. Students will have the opportunity to see and use Montessori materials in a concrete way to improve these skills. Before instruction begins, we’ll take a few minutes to do introductions, a brief icebreaker and review some simple class rules. Then the fun begins!

The golden beads are the most concrete math material because they represent the actual value of a number. Their size, mass and shape different each place value. In addition, they are a link to geometry because they are the first representations of point lines surface and solid. I will be screen sharing my materials via document camera so learners can have a more genuine and realistic experience of learning how to use the beads. We always begin work with place value, composition of a number, and each operation with the golden beads.

In our lesson , we will show the set of golden beads, and place labels for their place value under each material. (ones bead, ten bar, hundred square, and thousand cube. Learners will record this work by writing/tracing the words under each value. I will help guide students towards abstraction and give them time to work and practice independently. I believe in student centered learning, so I am happy to adjust to the pace at which they are comfortable and confident. More challenging work can be given if that’s needed as well!

I look forward to helping your learner build their concrete and abstract math skills in this engaging and stimulating course. See you in math class!

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Parental guidance is recommended if scissors are used for cutting of printable golden beads material. Occasionally, I will use Canva in a screen sharing capacity only with learners. This does not require any family to have a subscription to this third party tool.
Supply List
Students will be provided with printable copies of the following:
Printable golden beads, one sheet of each place value (1-1000)
Colored place value cards from units to thousands

Learners should have paper & pencil for class.

* If your learner has the golden beads material, I would suggest a placemat or small work mat to use under the beads so they don’t move or roll.

Hello! I am so excited to teach your kiddos on Outschool! I have a degree in Elementary Education and have been teaching over 20 years. I also have a specialty Montessori certificate in grades 1-3, and a TESOL certification credential. For nine years I specialized as a learning Title I learning support teacher with a focus in reading and writing in the language arts curriculum with 5-9 year olds. I have taught 1st and 2nd grade in a Montessori classroom. I love helping children learn to read by teaching the fundamental skills of early reading, grammar and writing. I also teach many cultures themed lessons for learners where we can enjoy exploring topics of our planet and space together!
I love to help children learn and be successful in the classroom through fun and engaging activities. I like to make classes challenging and rewarding for students, and I have a very student centered approach, which is aligned with the Montessori teaching philosophy. I think of myself as a guide, who always strives to meet children at their instructional level.
Outside of teaching, I am a mother of adult boy/girl twins. My husband and I have a senior rescue terrier named Sandy and we love to go for long walks. I also enjoy living a very healthy lifestyle which includes walking, hiking, yoga, running and enjoying nature whenever possible!
Thank you for taking the time to find out more about me. I hope to see your child in the classroom soon!
