1 hour per week. Some math follow up activities will be provided so students can review and practice what was taught in class. This will be completed independently.Class Experience
US Grade 1 - 2
In this child centered, multi day class, learners will be taught place value and static subtraction using the Montessori stamp game. Students will have the opportunity to see and use Montessori materials in a concrete way to practice these skills. Before instruction begins, we’ll take a few minutes to do introductions, a brief icebreaker and review some simple class rules. Then the fun begins! I will be screen sharing my materials via document camera so learners can have a more genuine and realistic experience of learning place value and subtraction. Students will practice place value from ones to thousands and learn the color coding strategy for each place. (green, blue, red) We will practice building and reading numbers into the thousands both in class and for follow up independent practice. Learners will also learn a bit about the history of the stamp game before being given step by step instructions on how to use it. We will start with subtraction ones and tens (no dynamic) , then build up to static subtracting in the hundreds and thousands. I will help guide students towards abstraction and give them time to work through problems independently. I believe in student centered learning, so I am happy to adjust to the pace at which they are comfortable and confident. More challenging work can be given if that’s needed as well! Please see the following breakdown of sessions and topics: Week of Nov. 13, Topic 1- Place value and building numbers from ones to thousands with color coding instruction. Time for group and independent practice will be given to reinforce this skill. Week of Nov. 20, Topic 2- Review of color coded place value. Introduction to stamp game will be taught alongside supplemental stamp game coloring and labeling activity. Week of Nov. 27, Topic 3- Instruction will be given in proper laying out of color coded stamps for static subtraction into the tens and hundreds place. Group and independent practice will serve as follow up. Week of Dec. 4, Topic 4- After reviewing the subtraction of tens with the stamp game, we will extend by subtracting into the hundreds and thousands, using our materials and practice attachments. In order to be successful in this course, learners should be able to count by tens, identify ones, tens and hundreds, build and read higher numbers, and write larger numbers correctly. Again, no “borrowing “ skills are required for this class! I look forward to helping your learner build their concrete and abstract math skills in this engaging and stimulating course. See you in math class!

Hello! I am so excited to teach your kiddos on Outschool! I have a degree in Elementary Education and have been teaching over 20 years. I also have a specialty Montessori certificate in grades 1-3, and a TESOL certification credential. For nine years I specialized as a learning Title I learning support teacher with a focus in reading and writing in the language arts curriculum with 5-9 year olds. I have taught 1st and 2nd grade in a Montessori classroom. I love helping children learn to read by teaching the fundamental skills of early reading, grammar and writing. I also teach many cultures themed lessons for learners where we can enjoy exploring topics of our planet and space together!
I love to help children learn and be successful in the classroom through fun and engaging activities. I like to make classes challenging and rewarding for students, and I have a very student centered approach, which is aligned with the Montessori teaching philosophy. I think of myself as a guide, who always strives to meet children at their instructional level.
Outside of teaching, I am a mother of adult boy/girl twins. My husband and I have a senior rescue terrier named Sandy and we love to go for long walks. I also enjoy living a very healthy lifestyle which includes walking, hiking, yoga, running and enjoying nature whenever possible!
Thank you for taking the time to find out more about me. I hope to see your child in the classroom soon!
